1. 2068 video problem

Brad Dillon · Sun, 26 Apr 2015 00:29

I just bought a Sinclair 2068 in great condition but the video output is extremely noisy. Is there someone I could send the computer to in order to check it out and fix the issue?

Thanks!

Attached is a simple mod that cleans up the picture quite a lot. There are mods that connect a composite monitor or even an RGB monitor but the best is a mod that connects the Sinclair monitor. The attached is very simple and clearly explained. You might find that is all you need to start. Let us know how you make out.

I think they are all like that. I've had a couple of them over the years with the same issue...

I tried this mod a few years ago and managed to pull up the traces on my 2068. The problem was my own fault, since I soldered the replacement voltage regular in backward (live a little, learn a lot). It wasn't until I removed the new regular that the trace came up. I still have the non-repaired system in the garage, but since I have another 2068, I decided not to fix the one that I managed to mess up.

As noted by someone else, the 2068's are known for shabby video. My other 2068's video quality looks exactly the same as the first; it's really what I've come to expect from the computers. If you have a problem with color (mine was WAY off), then there is a simple fix for that that only requires adjusting some pots in the unit.

Good luck!

Adam

7. Re: [ts2068] 2068 video problem

Eduardo Fuentes · Mon, 27 Apr 2015 11:49

Hi Brad,
There is another mod to improve video quality. It is located at the files section of the group. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ts2068/files/2068%20Video%20mod/

Some people said the problem is a ripple in 5V produced by u78s40 (switching voltage regulator).
Merging the 78L12 mod with this perhaps can improve the video quality. I've not tested neither of both mods, but in the worst case they are inocuous.
Regards,Eduardo.

I just bought a Sinclair 2068 in great condition but the video output is extremely noisy.  Is there someone I could send the computer to in order to check it out and fix the issue?

Thanks!

Thank you everyone.. I appreciate it!

I have attached a picture to show my video output. I am wondering if I have a bad video chip or memory chip because I tried a few games and some of the graphics did not look correct. I suppose it could all be this noisy video related.

Does anyone know if anyone in the US works on these systems? I am not good at soldering, etc... I need to learn but that will take time. :-)

Are you using TS-2068's original power supply?Perhaps its electrolytic capacitor is dry and is letting noise to pass into the computer. Check mainboards caps too.
Don't think too much, replace them if you have any doubt. They are very cheap.Any Tv tech guy can replace all caps in 10 minutes.

Sorry i'm from Argentina. ;-)
