Hi Folks; I've not been very active for years at this point, but it was
always nice to see messages go by with discussion from the true fans of the
Timex Sinclair 2068. The list was created in September of 2001 (there was a
email list before that). I'm amazed that it's lasted 18+ years given the
rate that technology changes. Life, work, and hobbies continue to evolve,
but I still keep my small slice of 1980s nostalgia in boxes, for the day I
would like to boot it up and play with it again (maybe retirement in
another 18 years?).
Regarding the list, I want to say thank you to the moderators that picked
up where I left off: Al Hartman, Fred Meunier, and Andrew (cheveron).
Truly appreciate it.
I did spend a bit of time manually downloading the file archives - bitrot
has set in and some of the assets aren't available (photos, mostly). If
anyone ever wants a zipped up package of these files, reach me via email
and I'll find a sharing site to post it on.
Sadly, I wasn't able to archive the conversations/email exchanges as I
don't have a windows system and that is the one tool that could do that
function, so sadly that will be lost when Y! groups shuts down starting
tomorrow.
If you do the social media thing, there is a TS2068 group on Facebook,
perhaps I'll see you on there.
Thank you for the great interactions over the years, and I hope to see you
again.
Wishing you all the best,
Louis

After the holidays, I'm going to be uploading a couple of Yahoo group archives to archive.org. Maybe you can add the T/S 2068 group there.

Adam, how'd you go about downloading the y! group contents to re-point them

Looks like the images/files section of the y! groups are already gone.

My understanding is that for private groups (those that require approval to join) only the admin can request the archive from Yahoo, and it sounds like there is a tool to do this but it requires Windows.
I do not use Windows either, but if somebody here does, I would suggest that person be made admin so that the tools could be used to request the archive. Spreading this permission hardly matters at this point, since it would appear that the only thing it's really going to ever permit is exactly that: requesting and getting the group archive.
Yahoo has said that it will honor archive requests until the end of the January, at which point the data will be actually deleted.
Some of us will have archives in the form of an mbox file with all the messages in it. That's better than nothing. My archive only goes back a couple of years though. It would be better to get the official archive direct from Yahoo and then provide it to the Archive Team so they can post it to the Internet Archive along with the other Yahoo groups they've collected.
I hope that these archives can be saved. I'm sure there is knowledge here that will be just lost, and some of it (nobody knows which part) someone in the future may find useful. I myself have yet to really start playing with my 2068 and I was intending to peruse the messages at that point once I started. I hope the messages will still be perusable.

The archive is no longer accessible on my dashboard - the email group
continues to work for a bit longer but no archive at all. I did request
the archive through the Y! process but I've not received it yet, and don't
know if I will (I read somewhere that it could be days). If it comes and
is digestible I'll make it available as possible.

If you haven't already downloaded the content from a Yahoo group, then it's too late to do it now. I have a smattering of the messages that I downloaded using PG Offline. I have about 4,000 messages. If you're interested, then I can export them after the holidays in 2020. I go on vacation with my family tomorrow and will be in and out of contact until the beginning of the new year.
Remember that anything that we post to the TS2068 Yahoo group will go to all members, but it will no longer be saved on the Yahoo groups.

I am not admin or moderator on any groups so I don't know where it is. It might be here:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata
I've submitted my own request but it may only be sending me things I posted myself. The request is pending, and I gather it can take days for the requests to be processed. I didn't have many options for archiving, maybe moderators have more. I assumed that the reason I couldn't see any group archiving options was because I don't have powers over any groups.
I'm not sure what Louis was referring to as needing to be run on Windows -- maybe we could find out where where that issue/requirement arose?

All groups archived were removed Dec. 14th. If they weren't downloaded by then, then I've read they're gone unless they were already transferred or downloaded. Some people say nothing ever disappears off the Internet. This will be a good test of that theory.

According to Yahoo:
https://twitter.com/YahooCare/status/1204312076379926528
We will stop making the content available or viewable from the http://groups.yahoo.com portal at 11:59 PM PT on Dec 14, 2019, but we will not delete it until all requests submitted prior to Jan 31, 2020 have been processed.
...which is what I was referring to when I said...
>> Yahoo has said that it will honor archive requests until the end of the January, at which point the data will be actually deleted.
So there should still be a way to request the data, and it sounds like the data has already been requested. So now we wait to see if they deliver what we're hoping for.
Though I assume it was essentially a joke, there is of course no need to test the obviously false hypothesis that nothing ever disappears off the internet. These messages are all about a computer that hadn't been for sale for a minimum of 12 years. If nobody here on the list saved them, certainly nobody out in the rest of the world did (or could) except for Yahoo itself. So they won't magically resurface, they'll actually be gone, and that's why it seems like it was worth the effort to request the data before Yahoo deletes it.
I think we're kind of lucky to be on a list where there is at least some recent activity and people paying attention. I bet there's a bunch of more dormant lists (even if their archives are valuable) that will get deleted without anybody noticing until it's far too late.

Paul's right, the contents are gone already from the groups ui.
I checked for my download:
Your Yahoo Groups data
We are currently processing your download request. Please check back later.
If it comes through, I'll package it up and share.
