When I scan my books now, I use my double-sided sheet scanner (Canon DR-2010C).  It means that I have to cut off the binding of the book.  Some people are not willing to do this, but I usually am scanning in books that can be bought quite inexpensively on Amazon.com.  Using a sheet scanner makes the process mostly automatic.  Sometimes on books that are not in good shape I have to scan one page at a time... but even then it scans them faster then I can feed it to it.  I recently scanned in a book, one page at a time, cleaned the page images up in Photoshop, then put it together in Acrobat (along with chapter names).  It took me about, at most, three hours.  I don't know how I ever got along without this scanner and I highly recommend it!

I've been researching this myself, because I'm not really happy with any of
the usual processes for my particular needs. Professional book scanners are
way too expensive, so I've been considering the Plustek OpticBook 3600
Flatbed Scanner, though I'm still shopping around for the best price. The
good thing with that scanner is that you don't need to destroy the books or
magazines, the bad part is that it's a very manual process. Of course, I
have yet to try software like "Snapter" to see if that provides an even
cheaper - and far simpler and quicker - process.

I had never heard of this before.  I took a look and I may try it when I scan my next book.  It will take longer than the process I used now, but it will mean I get to keep the book together.  I guess I'll have to setup a tripod or something.  I imagine the documentation gives tips on how to do this.  This would be the ideal solution for a book that I got recently that usually sells for about $150.

4. Another book being scanned

My mind tells me that I already made a post about this, but I can't find it anywhere.
The late Dr. Oleg D. Jefimenko was famous for his books, but back in 1985 he released a book about Music for the TS2068. The gentleman in charge of his estate gave me full permission to scan his book and host it online.

To read more about this, please visit the following url:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekpub.cgi?regexp=^Oleg+D.+Jefimenko$&loadpics=on

If you can't copy/paste it, please use this url instead:

http://tinyurl.com/yh23bh4

When visiting the above link you can click on "details" to see the details of the permit, or clikc on "wikipedia" to learn more about the late Dr. Jefimenko.

I estimate 2 months to finish scanning and preparing the book. Once I'm done I'll return it to Rod Humphries, who was kind enough to mail it to be. Thank you Rod for trusting me.

One day, if funds permit, I will get one of those stand-alone HP or Xerox scanners and will get a lot more done. Meanwhile I will just keep doing it little by little. I'm also not very good at this whole pdf creation thing. But everyone is more than welcome to improve anything that I share with the group, as long as you're also planning on sharing too. ;)
I can scan things and share them either as JPGs or PDFs or both. But I'll leave things like chapter creation and other details to those who like to add those things. :)
