1. Best Exclusive TS 2068 Titles

Adam Trionfo · Thu, 3 Jan 2008 23:05:

If you all had to pick the best exclusive titles for the TS 2068 in these catagories, what would you choose? Keep in mind that I'm looking for software that wasn't a port or released on another computer.

The Best...

1) Game (cartridge)

2) Game (tape)

3) Utility

4) Application

5) Demo (if they exist)

Questions like this can sometimes bring up strong feelings. If so, let me hear about them. Maybe you like a game that is notorious for being TERRIBLE becuase it shares a special place in your heart. Share your thoughts.

KInda of hard to remember since I was 13-14 when I had
a 2068 ;-)
Hungry Horace I loved think it was a tape.
Vu-cad on cartridge was the coolest program I saw in
1983.
I loved Flight Simulator too.

I can’t find any mention of this program. I can find VU-Calc, the spreadsheet, but not VU-CAD. VU-Calc isn’t what you’re talking about though (I don’t think) as (according to http://www.timexsinclair.org/software), this was only released on tape. Could you clear this up?

I can’t find this. I DID find the Spectrum version at worldofspectrum.org, but there is supposed to be a TS 2068 version. Can anyone point to that?

Those have always been popular. I’ve never been any good at them. This program I DID find (on the Yahoo group). I’ll give it a try. I’m sure I won’t be any good at it. If I could SHOOT something, then that might help.

When Timex was stopped making the TS2068, the
employees got them for free, with programs. My
stepmother's brother was an engineer there and gave me
all the stuff he could get his hands on. Had a
printer, timex modem and the cassette tape player. I
had a bunch of games on cassettee and cartridge. I
remember being very
impressed by the wire comb that VU-3D made.

BTW There's a PC version of Hungry Horace that I
played a couple of years ago. BTW it was way better in
my memory ;-)

M. Emrah Oral · Fri, 4 Jan 2008 15:50:

Now, I dont want you to damage your 2068 or your monitor/TV based on the info in my previous email so if you decide to make an RGB cable like the one I was talking about, please make sure that both devices can survive and not take any permanent damage even if the signal is not compatible.

I dont know if you are familiar with the ZX Spectrum +2 or not, but that model has an RGB socket too and the users manual says it carries TTL level RGB signals. I used the exact same trick (simple cable with resistors in series on RGB+Sync lines) to connect the ZX Spectrum +2 to the same Sony TV (KN-C2161D) I use with my 2068 and the +2 produces a crystal clear image too. With both the 2068 and the +2, I bring the brightness on the TV down a bit though, because the image looks too bright. Without the resistors it was WAY too bright. So may be the value of the resistors need to be tweaked. What is interesting is, I also have a ZX Spectrum +3, the model with the built in floppy drive. It has the same type RGB socket. DIN plug and all. But the users manual does not say that the RGB signal is digital, like the +2. Regardless, the cable I use with the +2 works just fine with the +3.. (using the same SONY TV) May be I have a really good TV that tolerates and
accepts a bunch of different kinds of RGB signals thru the SCART socket.

-------------------
Quote :
I am pretty sure it is digital too. I simply made a cable (I can send you a photo if you'd like to see it) using an edge connector socket I removed from a broken interface, soldered resistors in series to the RGB+Sync lines to bring down the %V signal, and fed the signal to my Sony TV with an RGB SCART socket. I am not sure whether the resistors did the trick or whether my TV is actually capable of accepting TTL RGB through SCART. The model number of the TV is Sony KV-C2161D (PAL/NTSC/SECAM) . I get a crystal clear picture from the 2068. I also took the audio signal from the 2068 and fed it to the TV using the audio pins in the scart socket.

I'm PRETTY sure that the signal for the TS 2068 that is on the edge connector is digital... but I just want to make sure. If it is digital, then I need to make a circuit (which is in the tech manual). If it is analog, then there is no need, because everything needed is already on the edge connector.

Are you sure you don't mean View-3D? I believe it was
the software title for 3D rendering.
Coolest Game on Cartridge - Penetrator, Coolest Game
on tape? Penetrator, Utility? Some of us have disk
drives on our TS 2068's so a distinction needs to be
made there,I used the Larken disk utilities. The WORX
database and Planner (kinda like Office Suite bundle)
adapted from the Spectrum for the 2068 with all tape
In/Out Routines converted to disk commands (Larken
Format) was awesome in its day. MSCRIPT II word
processor was my favorite application. Sorcerer
adapted from the Spectrum was the killer game,
especially with an RGB interface add-on for the
display. The demo/intro to View 3D remdering
application was a good one for the Demo category.
Good luck with your 2068 research.

11. Didatik and more

M. Emrah Oral is right on the money for VU-3D.
BTW I have a Didatik that I got from Czech Republic,
anyone want to make me an offer, it's just gathering
dust. It's in mint condition I'll take some pics this
weekend, also comes in a pretty mint box.

Here's a link to what it looks like.

14. Re: [ts2068] Re: Best Exclusive TS 2068 Titles‏

Louis Florit · Sun, 2 Mar 2008 16:44:

Adam Trionfo wrote this about creating tzx or tap files:

How about a few tips on how to go about that?
>>

Generally it goes like this:

1) Use a gold-plated cable and plug from the Mic jack on the TS 2068
into the input of your sound card. The gold-plated cable makes ALL
the difference in the world, so don't settle for anything less.
2) Press play on tape and record in your PC's music program with these
settings: 8-bit, mono, at 44,100
3) Save the recording as a WAV file.
4) Convert the recording to a digital file using a TZX utility. The
program "MakeTZX" works well.
5) You can now load the TZX file on an emulator.
6) To convert the TZX file to a WAV file for playback from your
computer's speakers to your TS 2068 use a conversion program. I like
TAPE2WAV.

One warning about the above. When playing a program back from the PC
you'll need to use speakers. If you just try to use a laptop's
built-in audio, then you are doomed to failure. Also, the volume
usually needs to be turned almost all of the way up.

Tape utilities are available here:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/utilities.html

Does that help?

>>
Also a bit of a tutorial on using TAP(?) or other feeds into my 2068?
>>

The above-mentioned program, TAPE2WAV will work for TAP files too.
One cool aspect of the tape software for the TS 2068 is that it is SO
easy to get software from the Internet and use it with the TS 2068
since the TS 2068 only expects an audio signal. No fancy cables. No
fancy programs (TAPE2WAV is drag and drop).

One cool aspect of the tape software for the TS 2068 is that it is SO easy
to get software from the Internet and use it with the TS 2068 since the TS
2068 only expects an audio signal. No fancy cables. No fancy programs
(TAPE2WAV is drag and drop).

Wow, your website, I've not seen it before. Somehow it didn't get
indexed in google yet, I searched for Musicola and there is very few
links about it.

Its very nicely put together!

Thanks, I'll try it out later tonight...

Cool little site! Did you just put this together or has this been around awhile?

The community size is small, we get about 10-20 visits per day on the
timexsinclair.org site...

But its well designed, real nice and clean layout... And its
different from the other ts2068 sites out there..

Tthe site has been around for a while, gathering dust. I have quite a
few more software titles to add to it, but somehow never find the time
to update it. I should also get a real domain, but the number of
visitors is really small. Maybe I'll give it another try...

The official Timex archive on WoS is coming. However, I have to create a web page and screenshots for each entry and I've been rather busy with a new job at the moment.

You can take a look at the index for now.

Guys,

My site with a number of TS2068 programs is out for a while, because I changed ISPs and lost the webspace. I will be relaunching it soon, hopefully with additional programs. I just need to find a little more time to finish and upload everything. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it is available.
