1. Emulator woes

Hello Everyone...

I have upgraded to a new computer with a clock speed of 1.5
Gig only to find that it is too fast for the Lunter Z80 (DOS) ZX
Spectrum emulator -- despite having tried software that is supposed
to slow the pc enough for the program to work. I guess I should not
have waited until the crunch to invest in a Window's based emulator
but here I am. I downloaded the Windows version of Lunter's emulator
only to find out that it is crippleware for which there no longer
seems to be no way to purchase the fully functional version. So, I
am asking for information on what is out there in the way of Window's
based emulators in the hopes that some of you have used them and can
advise.

Thank you all for your time and trouble.

Have you tried the address listed at

http://www.fidcal.com/Outlet/indexSpectrum.htm

(see 'Spectrum version' as to why this might be relevant)?

SPIN: http://www.zxspin.co.uk/ (freeware)
Spectaculator: http://www.spectaculator.com/ (shareware)

Cheers,

Phil

Hi,

Yes, Z80 is quite long in tooth now. Spectaculator -- www.spectaculator.com
-- is very good but it is also shareware. You can download it and try for
30 days. The latest Spin is a good free alternative; it is much too slow
to be practical on my machine but on yours it should be fine.

Fuse deserves mention particularly in this group. It is one of the best
emulators
available, is free, but mainly targetted at Linux/Unices. There is a
Windows port
available that you can try but not all features are present (eg the monitor/
debugger/assembler that I was looking to sample) and the Windows user
interface
is not as polished as other Windows emulators. However, it has TC2048 and
TC2068
emulation built-in, with the TC2068 being almost the same as the TS2068.
Some of the authors read this group so you can expect to get questions
answered
here. This is the most accurate and featured TS2068 emulator being
developed.

These three are the technically best and most accurate emulations at
present. They've each got unique features that are very useful if you're
"hardcore". I use Spectaculator for general use and Windows fuse +
Warajevo + vbSpec to test 2068-specific programs.

Others I'll mention:

vbSpec supports the TC2048 (and therefore the extended display modes
of the TS2068)

Warajevo is an older DOS emulator but it also has TS2068 emulation.
Not as accurate technically as the newer crop. Not sure how well
it would work under XP.

Multimachine is an older Windows emulator that, among other machines,
also emulates the TS2068.
