1. GEAR DRAMA

pxx1_2000_32724 · Mon, 26 Dec 2011 14:24

This is exactly why I haven't gotten into a first come first served basis, updating inventory lists, more than one person wanting the same item, with all of the gear that I need to get shed of. When someone comes up with a method that doesn't create hard feelings between group members interested in the same items, to unload Timex gear,(at a reasonable price), please let me know. Peace..Happy Holidays to all.

A grown up can deal with the very fair "first come, first served" concept.

Life works like that. Stores run sales like that.

Life is inherently unfair, by not teaching people how to deal with that in
an adult manner, you cripple them.

Attitudes like that are exactly why stores have to put one to a customer limits
on their best sales.

Al's world notwithstanding, there was no "drama" associated with the drawing for the TS Gear. The drawing has been made and requesters/recipients will be notified shortly as to what exactly I've been able to dump on them....err...ahhh...that is, what good fortune has given them.

Actually I'd like Al's world if I was buying a lottery ticket - if you get in early you're assured of a big prize. And the brawls at the Walmart on Black Friday are fun to watch. Brings out the best in human nature. Malthus would be proud.

Common sense?

How humans operate in the real world?

I don't have an "attitude," I'm reflecting how the real world operates.

"How would eBay work if instead of the person who makes the highest bid
before the end of the auction didn't get the item, and instead a drawing
 of all bidders was done?"......

That's not the only way it's done. There are things called "Silent Auctions" where everyone puts their best bid in the pot and at the end of the auction all the bids are examined and the highest wins no matter when the bid was made.

Al, your world exists but it's not the only one. Does the first voter in a democracy have more value than the last voter? There are many ways for the world to function. In this small matter I choose a methodology that is fair to all rather than to the strong or fleet.

When you go shopping and take the last item off the shelf, does the store manager stop you and tell you, you can't have it until 4 more people show up and he can draw a name out of a hat?

That would be silly.

How would eBay work if instead of the person who makes the highest bid before the end of the auction didn't get the item, and instead a drawing of all bidders was done?

You guys have funny ideas about "first come, first served."

If it was bad as you say, the whole world wouldn't work that way.

Ebay doesn't work on a "first come, first served" basis on it's auctions.  It works on a highest bidder... regardless of when you place your bid.
The two things are NOT the same.

Christopher.

Al,
Rod has the gears. As we say in Argentina, "he is the owner of the ball".
Rod sets the rules.
If you want to play (or get some things), you have to accept Rod's rules.
The world works like this too.
I play with Rod's rules, I ask for some things and I hope that I can get them. If I'm not so lucky, fine, the next time can be me.

In the last handout, I was lucky and I got the things that I asked for. Rod was very kind and he did his best to make the shipping costs as cheap as possible. Hats off to Rod.

Regards,
Eduardo.

I never said there was something wrong with you.
Nobody said life was fair and neither is first come first served.

I've never said Rod couldn't do with his stuff what he wished.

But telling me there's something wrong with me because I prefer "first come", first served doesn't fly with me.

There's nothing wrong with it. Most of life works that way, and it is every bit as fair as drawing lots.

Al, this offering was not "the real world." This offering was a raffle. If raffles worked like "the real world" then raffles would be pointless. The first person who buys a raffle ticket would always get a prize. The very facts that these are fairly rare items, there are fewer items than people who are interested in those items AND the current owner of the items chooses to make the items available to good homes for almost no cost would seem to make the raffle system the most equitable to the most people.

Rod is bending over backward to make this GIVEAWAY fair.
Be thankful people.

Richard..it's OK. There's only one person unhappy with the way the gear is being divyed up and that person never even asked for anything anyway. So it doesn't matter. No one in the handout has taken any exception to the method of deciding who gets what. We're all having a bit of fun and we get new (old) stuff to play with. Just ignore the babble of small voices. It's all good. No worries, mate!

If you're referring to me, I wasn't in the least unhappy with how you chose to give away your stuff.

I'm only unhappy with being told I'm a bad person because I believe "first come, first served" is a valid way of giving stuff away too.

It's your stuff, give it away how you want.
