1. Help needed to prepare JPGs before creating PDFs

zxbruno · Wed, 04 Nov 2009 06:36

I have several things that have been scanned and would like to share with you (none of them have anything to do with Zebra Systems) but I need help. Even though everything has been scanned and preserved as JPG images, it would be better if the final PDF had all pages orientated correctly (some are tilted now), the right contrast and brightness, etc. Some of these things include but are not limited to:

-Documentation on how to work with eproms (haven't checked if it's for the TS2068 or the TS1000)
-John Oliger Co. manuals for his disk interface and parallel printer port interface
-The guide to TS telecommunications - Might not be of much use today, but I thought it was worth preserving. It was the result of a big combined effort of many TS users back in the day.

I'm also in the process of scanning all the newsletters that were published by the Vancouver Sinclair group. Once I'm done scanning all of them there'll lots of GBs of data to go through. Those who are willing to help please contact me or post here, but e-mail is preferred.

Thanks to all who have sent me material to be scanned without seeing it as an opportunity to get rich. You know who you are! :)

I have all the software that I need to do the necessary cleaning, conversion, adjustements, etc. but it's simply too much work for just one person, thus the request for a helping hand.

Thanks.

Sounds like you need PhotoShop. It will allow you to make those changes and save directly as a PDF.

Thanks, I have all the software that I need, but it's simply too much work for just one person. I'm hoping that someone will want to help me go through all the JPGs that I'm gathering and just make them look better before I (or them) make the final conversion to PDF. I could just scan directly to pdf, but it would look really bad.

The book on how to build robots for Sinclair computers, for example, took months to scan, fix and convert to pdf. The final is at the worldofspetrum.org now, and it looks clean and all pages are straight. That's my intention. :)

I wanted to do the same thing with the entire collection of Sync Magazines, but unfortunately I only have about a dozen of them. The former editor of the magazine game me written permission to scan everything and post it online and share them with others. Unfortunately he only had Sync n.1 to give me.

I have always used Picasa from Google is for free and easy to use and without bullshit.
Just scan all you need, install it(PICASA), open the image right click(open with) the image with picasa3(in edit) make the cut, rotate and use 'I am lucky' and is over(if you need a little more light[gamma] just use it!).Very easy, no need any special classes with an isntructor(or teacher) like when using Photoshop(at least for me! No offense if you like it better.)
Than you cand use your PDF printer(I use CutePDF Writer free edition and its great never fails and is fast). I still use Win XP, so I like to print it(any image) with 'ACDsee Classic' where you can size the borders(paper orientation, landscape or letter) and give extra gamma if needed....but that is all my preferences... you can adjust as you wish!
If you need any help, just put all or some of the images(in a ZIP file) in a big file, upload them to rapidshare... that I can make these adjustments in the images,or even PDF files, if you like... And give the rapidshare address...OK!
Regards
Oscar

Thank you very much for the tips and for offering to help. I've also receive e-mails from two gentleman who offered their help and I'll be replying to them soon (you know who you are). This week I've been busy moving to a new apartment but when I get back I'll resume this.

I will probably take up on your offer and send a couple things to rapidshare or megaupload. I will also share the links here for those who just want to take a peek at the scans right away.

Thanks everyone.

There is a batch feature in PhotoShop, where if all of the scans are in one folder, and need to be all the same size and resolution, you can use the "automate" feature to do them all at once. This helps speed things up as well....good luck!
