You know, it's nice to sometimes get emails from groups like this when they're not normally very active. They make you remember some of the hardware you own! Because of these recent messages, over the last couple of days I've been thinking about dragging out my one working T/S 2068 and playing a couple of games. It's been about four of five years since I've used the system.
This afternoon, I converted the Penetrator game (sort of like Scramble) to a WAV file, put it on my old iPhone 5 (which I used as an iPod Touch) and loaded the game into my 2068 without any trouble. The game played on the very first load. Hooray! I don't have any joysticks for the system, but the keyboard control worked just fine. Not a great game, but it worked, and that's the important part!
I was going to link to a video of the game in action, but I couldn't find a video of it for the T/S 2068, but here is a video on YouTube of the Spectrum version (it looks basically the same):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I1JuABsyZs
Now I'm listening to the TS-2068 Demo by Mr. Beep from 2010. It's crazy how he is able to get the tinny internal speaker to actually make music! Here's a link to the demo:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=4000135
Can anyone recommend any T/S 2068 games (or tech demos) that I can play tonight that don't require joysticks? That is, they can be played using the keyboard?
I also have the Spectrum Emulator cart-- I'll have to try that out. Can anyone recommend some interesting Spectrum games (BASIC or ML) that don't take forever to load?

The last time I told someone I liked to play Penetrator, they looked at me funny.
Thank you for your post. It's great to see use the old hardware again. Sometimes, it feels like Christmas.
If you found beeper music interesting, maybe you'll find digital one interesting as well. Did you know the TS2068 has an AY chip that can be use to play digitised samples, music, or speech? There are many Spectrum games and demos that do this, but if I remember correctly, they must be altered to play on the TS2068 (the ports are different, or something along those lines). Any AY chip, internal or external (on an interface) can do it. I already knew that the Spectrum and TS2068 could hold 3.5 seconds of digitised audio by filling the entire ram with the data, but this is different. You can have our old computers play *minutes* of digitised audio. YouTube has several examples. I'll post links if you can't find them.

Is there anywhere to download all the TS2068 wav files so I can use with my 2068?
Thanks!

That's partially true; there is software for the T/S 2068 on the Yahoo site, but it's not in WAV format. Still, you can use it on real hardware after converting it to a usable format. The Yahoo group's software archive is here:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ts2068/files/Timex%20Archive/
This direct link probably won't work. If it doesn't work, then just visit the ts2068 site directly and navigate to the directory "Timex Archive" in the files section. There, you will find many programs in TZX and TAP formats for emulators. These can't be used directly on a real T/S 2068, but these files can be converted to WAV files via various programs. One such program that I use (for Windows) is called Tape2Wav v 1.8 by Mark Woodmass. This utility, along with many others, can be downloaded here:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/utilities.html
There are also programs in the 2068 software area in DCK format. Is there a way to use these on real 2068 hardware?
Once you have a T/S 2068 program in WAV format, then you can simply load it from your computer, iPod or phone. You can even burn the WAV file to a CD and load games from a CD player. You might have to fiddle with volume levels when you first try this on any device, but once you get the volume correct, then it should be fine for all the programs that you use.
Good luck-- and if you find any really fun programs, then I'd like to hear about them!

Recently, in an Argentinian group, an user is digitizing a lot of software for the TS-2068.He has 70 or 80 cassettes from a, now defunct, computer shop called "Valente Computacion".Many of them are adapted from ZX Spectrum, some are "originals" and others translated to spanish. The site is spanish spoken, but the programs are easy to download on the following link Foro - Retrocomputación

I actually have the software to convert from that format to a regular wav file if anybody is interested...

I just took a look at the site using Google Translator. It does quite a good job of translating the site to English. I could read most everything just fine. I semi-randomly picked a game and tried it on real hardware. I choose to play Terra Cresta, an arcade game conversion released by Imagine Software in 1986. I've attached two screenshots of the title screen:
1) Terra Cresta Title Screen - Timex/Sinclair 2068 loading the game on a CRT TV
2) Terra Cresta Title Screen - Sinclair ZX Spectrum screenshot from WorldofSpectrum.org
Do you notice how different the colors are on real hardware when compared to the screenshot from the emulator? Is this due to NTSC/PAL differences, my colors on my T/S 2068 being way off (thus, needing adjustment), or a combination of both? Could someone else please load Terra Cresta on their 2068 and take a screenshot? I'd like to compare the colors on their TV to my own system.
Here is a direct link to the Terra Cresta Timex/Sinclair 2068 conversion:
http://www.retrocomputacion.com/forum/software_s/107424/juegos-y-software-timex-sinclair-2068-by-valente-computacion/?id=108633&dl=0
Here is a link to Terra Cresta on The World of Spectrum website:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0005190
Mostly, I was just curious about loading the game to see if it worked, but I did play Terra Cresta a bit. These conversions were tested under emulation, but I'm happy to say that the game seems to run fine on real hardware.
The game can be controlled with (as usual) the keyboard, but the Kempston and Sinclair joysticks are also supported. I figured that the game might have been hacked to take advantage of the T/S 2068's joystick, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I played the game using the keyboard and it played okay. The animation in this game is pretty smooth, but-- as expected-- it suffers from all the Spectrum's color issues. As in many ZX Spectrum games, the color-clash has been avoided by making the game mostly monochrome. Still, the graphics are detailed and the game seems to run pretty smoothly.
Please, let the fellow archiving the software know that someone in the Southwest United States appreciates his efforts! I'll probably try some more software with a friend of mine when we get together next week.

I think your color problem are the YUV signal levels coming to the LM1889. It is nor related to the tv signal norm.
I've attached a color test program. If you have other colors than the program is displaying, you have to move presets VR1 to VR3 to adjust YUV signal levels.See TS-2068 technical manual to see where the presets are located on the board.

Thanks for the Color Test program. I loaded it on my real T/S 2068 without issue. I expected the program to simply display color bars, but what it puts on the screen is much more helpful. I've taken two screenshots. The first is of my real T/S 2068 running the Color Test program. The second screenshot is of Color Test running under the EightyOne 1.2 emulator. I've pasted the two screenshots together and attached them to this email. Take a look; my computer's colors are way off.
The following comparison is how the colors look to me on my real T/S 2068 hardware. The description after the dash is how the colors look on my system.
Black on White - Black okay, White okay
Yellow on Blue - Yellow is whitish, Blue is washed-out
Cyan on Red - Cyan (Blue) is green, Red is Magenta (Purple)
Green on Magenta -Green is okay, Magenta is Blue
Magenta on Green - Magenta is Blue, Green is okay
Red on Cyan - Red is Red is Magenta (Purple), Cyan (Blue) is green
Blue on Yellow - Blue is washed-out, Yellow is whitish
Black on White - Black okay, White okay
On my no-longer-working T/S 2068, I adjusted the colors on the 2068's motherboard, but my approach was slapdash at best. I never got the colors exactly right. I looked at page 47 (section 2.1.11.1 - Video Generation - Composite Video) of the TS2068 Technical Manual. It explains how the color should be set, but I can't say that I understand it.
What's the correct way to adjust the colors on a T/S 2068? I presume that this should NOT be done while the system is turned on, is that right? Is there a video available of the colors being adjusted on the T/S 2068?
As an aside, does the Sinclair ZX Spectrum suffer from this same color issue, where the colors varying over time?

Adam>>You can remove the screws and load the test program.Once it is running, remove the upper part of the case and disconnect the keyboard flat cable. If you have some practice, the presets can be adjusted even without removing completely the upper part.
With a screwdriver begin to touch the presets until you get the correct colors.
Turn off and on the TV a couple of times to check if you still have a color video. If you set some signals too high finally you got a black and white video when the TV or computer is reset.
It is safe to do this job with the computer turned on, beware to touch only the presets and do not make short circuits. There are no dangerous voltages.
Zx Spectrum doesn't suffer from this problem.

When adjusting ANY potentiometer with live voltage, use a non-metallic tool like a nylon screwdriver so as not to cause a short, or ruin the adjustment.
These pots are fragile, so adjust slowly and with as little force as possible.

<<Zx Spectrum doesn't suffer from this problem.>>
If I remember correctly the only appreciable difference in colors between TS and ZX is the black. On ZXs bright attribute doesn't have effect on black, it is always normalOn TSs bright attribute affects black, you can see this effect in Manic Miner or Jet Set Willy. The walking Willys (lives counter) and some backgrounds suffer from this "problem".

I've attached a picture of a close-up of my 2068 motherboard. You can see the three 10K ohm potentiometers: VR1, VR2 and VR3. I took this picture just in case I completely mess-up my colors when I'm adjusting these pots. With this picture, I should be able to adjust the pots to where they were when I started.
I'd like to say to Al, thanks for noting the possible damage I could cause using a screwdriver. The last time I did this adjustment (nearly ten years ago!), I bought a "Universal Color TV Alignment Tool Set." Which, basically, is a bunch of cheap plastic screwdrivers. I still have it and will use it for this adjustment.
The adjustment I did ten years ago was haphazard and I never got the colors 100% to my satisfaction. This time, I'd like to adjust the pots properly, if anyone here can teach me how. Here's what I gleaned from the service manual for what these pots do:
VR1 - Sync + White level
VR2 - B-Y Vector
Vr3 - R-Y Vector
Can anyone explain, in layman's terms, what this means? Do I need to adjust all three pots, or just one of them to get my colors correct?
Page 47 of the Service manual explain exactly what the phase should be set for in degrees. I think I need a vectorscope (which I don't own, nor do I have access to one) to be able to use these settings. Is there a way to use a digital multimeters to get the approximate values right?

To simplify things and without being technically correctVR1 is the bright (black and withe image component)VR2 is the blue componentVR3 is the red component
About the "degrees", forget it, is too much techincal and you need specialized tools to measure red and blue vectors.
The job is by trial and error, is more difficult to explain than do it.As you move the presets, you'll see the changes instantly and you'll deduce each function quickly.Don't be fearful, you can't broke any thing only moving these potentiometers. ;-)

The job is by trial and error, is more difficult to explain than do it.
As you move the presets, you'll see the changes instantly and you'll deduce each function quickly.
Don't be fearful, you can't broke any thing only moving these potentiometers. ;-)

I went ahead and made the adjustments. You barely have to turn the pots for the colors to change quite a bit. After about five minutes trail and error, I got the colors pretty-much spot on right. I've attached a picture to show the colors as they appear now on my Timex/Sinclair 2068. The left side shows the "before" screenshots. The right-side shows the "after" screenshots-- there is a huge difference.
Thanks for the helpful advice!

If I remember correctly the only appreciable difference in colors between TS and ZX is the black.
On ZXs bright attribute doesn't have effect on black, it is always normal
On TSs bright attribute affects black, you can see this effect in Manic Miner or Jet Set Willy. The walking Willys (lives counter) and some backgrounds suffer from this "problem". >>

This is the color difference that I was talking about. It's noticeable in quite a few games too. It makes graphic characters look like they are surrounded by a black-ish box. I wonder what made Timex decide to make this small, but significant, change on the Timex line of computers. I presume that this is a hardware issue and not a software (ROM) issue.

You are welcome. I'm glad you have resolved your issue. The picture is a lot better, but i think a it must have a little more yellow and a little more bright. Loading bars must be well defined yellow/blue.
I'll try to test Terra Cresta and take a picture on a CRT TV.
Another little adivice, somtimes the potentiometers are dirty.
To clean them, use a contact cleaner or isopropilic alcohol (or alcohol [I don't said that]) and move the wheels all the way from left to right a couple of times and left them in the original position.
After that, start with the trial and error procedure again if necesary.
