1. Keyboard Membranes
Rich M · Fri, 3 Dec 2010 12:23:
I have just received an enquiry from someone looking for a Timex 2048 keyboard membrane.
Presumably the TC-2048 and TS-2068 will both start suffering from membrane problems soon enough.
I have now found a manufacturer who can provide cost effective methods of producing batches of 50 keyboard membranes, so maybe this is another thing to look into - I just wonder what the market would be for these - presumably both machines need a different keyboard membrane?

I can open my TS2068. and look. However from the layout it is awfully close to a STD 48K

I have (5) membrane keyboards for the 1000 to dispose of. These are the pressure sensitive membranes that go under the keyboard. Also have the little short ribbon cable that connects the 2068 keyboard to the motherboard if anyone is interested. Colored aluminum face plates for the Spectrum as well.

The keyboards in the TS2068, TC2068, TC2048 and UK2086 are identical in size and layout, so I'd be surprised if they used a different matrix. Having said that the Timexen were built to a much higher quality than the Sinclair machine (which is odd considering Timex made those too). I've never heard of a Timex machine with a duff keyboard, although I suppose it's possible.

If they have the same keyboard membrane - I wonder if someone could send me a couple of membranes - one for the 2068 and one for the 2048 and maybe we can get a small stock made, depending on price
If they can use the same membrane as the 48K ZX Spectrum, then that would be great, but I think it unlikely.

As far as I know the TS1000 uses the same keyboard membranes you already sell for the ZX81. According to my friends all the membranes you sell are of the highest quality. I also know the ones you sell for the Spectrum 16K and 48K can be used on the TS1500. But I'm not sure about the TC2048 and similar models. If you get that TS2068 I sent you feel free to open it and grab whatever you need.
I rarely see Timex computers suffering from membrane issues, but it does happen!

They do not use the same membrane as the 48. The keyboard is slightly larger and includes a space bar.

I have only seen one TS2068 with a faulty keyboard membrane and if I recall correctly it had to do with the leads breaking and becoming too short rather than the membrane itself. AND, try as I might to take care, I completely destroyed the overlay during removal. It seems to be glued much better than the 48k or even the TS1500 and is soft plastic.
That said, I would think if one wanted to remake the membranes thought should be given to remaking the overlays as well. Maybe sell them as a set?

There just does not appear to be the market for TS2068 / 2048 membranes.
The issue with overlays is interesting - it took many years to find somewhere willing to make ones for the Spectrum - plastic mouldings are even more expensive tooling wise, and plastic manufacturers don't seem to want to know unless you want several thousand running off!
