1. List of people from the Timex-Sinclair days?

zxbruno · Mon, 10 May 2010 03:13

Hi everyone. I would like to create, with your help, a list of all the people who were part of the Timex-Sinclair history in this country. It would be similar to a wiki but it would have as much info as possible on who they were, what they did, where they are now and what they do know. Once the wiki was setup it could be updated by anyone with the knowledge and the will to do so. As far as I know there are many people who became known nation-wide when Timex exited the computer market. They were the ones who gave support to Timex users when Timex itself stopped doing it. Since I only arrived in the U.S. in 1995, I only have a general idea of what was going on at the time. With your help we could start putting together the pieces of this puzzle and understand the Timex Sinclair past a little bit better. I know, for example, that Larry Kenny left Bob in charge of everything related to Larken material for the TS2068. Bob has given us permission to redistribute Logicall and Larken software freely. I asked him to provide this permission formally by e-mail and he said he'll be doing this soon. He's also going to ask Frank Davis what his position is regarding copyrights, etc. (but I don't know what role Frank Davis had in the Timex Sinclair world yet).

As an example of people who I think were important at the time, the following names come to mind:

Bob "Gator" Swoger
Frank Davis
Larry Kenny
John Oliger
Byteback people
Zebra people
Keith Watson

Can someone people help me add more names to this list and provide whatever info they can remember? Please remember that I'm only 34 and I feel like an outsider who arrived too late and missed out on a lot of good stuff and never got a chance to meet a lot of good people. I'm trying to put things together and understand what happened at the time, but all I have is the internet and you.

I'm preparing a couple pictures of a 1987 Timex Sinclair event where many other key people showed up and it should help refresh people's memory.

The first two gentleman in the above list are still retro-fans, but they're now active in the CoCo community. I still talk to Bob once in a while (by phone).

One day I'll try to track down the gentleman who continued to develop Timex computers in Portugal after Timex left the computer market in the U.S. It's on my to-do list.

Hi Bruno,

In reading your message with the subject of "List of people from the Timex-Sinclair days?", I was surprised to see my name listed in it. The others listed there had a far greater influence on the Timex computer scene than I did. While thinking about who should be on your list I came up with few names that I suggest should be on that list. They are:

Jack Dohany - a part time software author and a vendor - wrote a terrific software patch to fix the Timex 2068 "Delete bug" and sold it in a 32k replacement ROM for the Timex (it included the Spectrum 16k as well); wrote software for a real-time clock that plugs into one of the chip sockets in the Timex; made software changes to and sold the best available Timex word processor, "MScript" and made several versions for the different storage systems on the market at the time; sold the Spectrum word processor "Word-Master" adapted with his changes to work with the different storage systems available here in the USA; wrote Timex code for a multiple key keyword entry program (the only two that I know of are version 5 and version 6); wrote other numerous software utilities and storage management programs.

Jerry and Til - owners of AERCO, don't know their last names but talked to them many times over the phone and at computer shows. They had disk drive interfaces for the Timex 1000 and Timex 2068, a dual serial port for Timex 2068, and a printer interface for the Timex 2068. In later years they started supporting other computers with hardware and software of their own design.

Carol and Frank Davis - vendors - They are/were the owners of FWD Computing located in Indiana, supplier of hardware and software for the Timex and other computers.

Rod Gowan - vendor - He was the owner of RMG Enterprises in Oregon City, Oregon, a supplier of hardware and software for the Timex.

David Hill - amateur software author - creator of "HDOS", a RAM based replacement for the AERCO ROM that gave the AERCO DD interface much more versatility and power. I don't think he ever sold it but gave it away to all that wanted it.

I'm sure that there are many others that should be on your list, but the ones I have listed above are known to me personally even though I haven't had any contact with most of them for several years.

Regards,

Keith Watson

Bruno, I want to add another name to your list.

Ray Kingsley - author of Super HOT Z for the Timex 2068. The Z80 machine code disassembler, assembler and single stepper program works on all of the native Timex memory banks. This 2068 bank switching version is, in my view, one of the best Timex programs ever written. He also had a version for the Timex 1000.

You can add all the authors of software in the Timex archive when I finally finish the thing. It's on my to-do list.
