1. Powerful Projects with your Timex/Sinclair

I received another TS 2068 book. This one is called, "Powerful Projects with your Timex/Sinclair" by Jim Stephens. I'm surprised it has this title. To me, that implies that it is for any Timex/Sinclair computer. It isn't. It is a TS 2068 exclusive. This book was published in 1985, which seems pretty late, as the computer was already a lame duck by then, right?

Here is a listing of the Table of Contents:

Chapter 1 - The Timex/Sinclair 2068 - 1

The 2068 System - 2
The Z80 CPU - 8
The Control Software - 21

Chapter 2 - Interfacing to the Real World - 37

The Control Devices - 38
Backward Designing - 39
The Interfacing Components - 40
Prototyping - 52
Constructing the Pulse Detector - 67

Chapter 3 - Simple Interfacing Hardware - 71

Electronic Hobby Skills - 71
The Power Supply - 73
The Backplane Connector - 81
Beffering the Signals - 87
Decoding - 89
Constructing the 7475 Output Port - 96
Constructing the 8212 Input Port - 100

Chapter 4 - Advanced Computer Control - 107

Home Electrical Control - 107
Home Lighting Control - 108
The Three-Channel Home-Appliciance Controller - 108
The Mail Indicator - 118
The Automatic Tape-Recorder Controller - 120

Chapter 5 - Microbotics - 125

Robotic Parts - 127
The Robotic Platform - 128
The Robotic Arm and Hand - 146
Robotic Feedback - 163

Chapter 6 - Advanced Feedback Projects - 169

The Speech Sythesizer for the Robot - 169
The Analog-to-Digital Converter - 177
The Weather Station - 185
The Moisture Detector - 185
The Wind Indicator - 188
The Temperature Sensor - 198

Chapter 7 - Going Further - 203

Appendixes - 207

Appendix A: Mail Order Suppliers - 207
Appendix B: The 2068 Memory Map - 209
Appendix C: Frequently Used Z80 Instructions - 210
Appendix D: Pinouts of Interfacing Components - 211
Appendix E: Transistor Configurations - 212
Appendix F: Common Schematic Symbols - 216
Appendix G: The Resistor Color Code - 218
Appendix H: A Device-Select Pulse Decoder for the TS 1000 and 1500 - 219
Appendix I: Converting 2068 Software for the TS1000 and 1500 - 220

Glossary - 221

Index - 225

The book looks pretty interesting. Electronic buffs might want to pick it up. I notice that amazon.com currently has two books in very good condition for $16.20 (plus shipping).

Even today, publishers have can have a lead time of a year or more (you have
to pre-announce the book many, many months in advance just to get it in the
pre-sales channel). If that book were written as soon as or shortly after
the Sinclair 2068 was released, then the 1985 publication date would make
sense. That would probably be a good time to release the book anyway,
because you figure inventroy would start to have been cleared out by then
and you have more or less had the maximum TS 2068 population just itching
for more to do with their systems. Nevertheless, it does amaze me how many
books were released for near instant failures like the Timex Sinclair 2068.
The computer book market was much more adventurous back then than it is
today it seems...

Hey Jack --

If you find the time, send me that hard drive and I'll extract
the relevant messages and return them to you. Just let me know
which email client you were using.

Best,

Glen

in another computer for retrieval. I guess all I really need to save is
the hard drive, the rest of the computer can go to the "old computer
resting place"...

4. Powerful Projects with your Timex/Sinclair

Stewart Newfeld · Mon, 18 Feb 2008 01:14

F.Y.I.

I saw your list's recent mention of this book "Powerful Projects with your
Timex/Sinclair" and remembered I have a case of them in new condition, (
they are shrink wrapped in groups of five ). So I just put one book up on
ebay for sale at its cover price of $12.95 plus $5 shipping.

I have several TS2068 titles in new condition. If some TS2068 enthusiast
would like to purchase an assortment of say 10 various title TS2068 books at
$5.00 each, for resale to individuals in the group, please let me know. I
really don't have cheap labor to deal with fulfillment on individual books
orders so I haven't bothered with the TS2068 books. But I can inventory
them the next time I am in my storage area ( could be months ), if there is
an interested party.
