Not to be discouraging, but it's been about 3 years since Eric Johnson
passed away. I wish someone could just go to Niel with a van or
truck, cart it all away and catalog whatever is left of the collection
at this point... Truth is, its most likely worthless to anyone except
the 200 or so members of this group. I fear the worst may have come
to his collection.
Kind of a sober thought, a person's life collection, poofted out of
existence. No one left to admire it, share the same wonder any
longer.
Of the individuals that actually know Eric, does anyone have his
widow's contact info? Maybe we can pool a donation based 'Save Eric's
Collection' and get someone to rescue it from obscurity or the dump.
I'd throw in 20$ without expectations of getting any gear out of it...
Maybe someone could volunteer to digitize any documentation to
publish on the web, or rescue any taped programs. Even pictures of
the collection would be better off...

I went hunting for the details of the accident:
1/16/06
Daytona Beach Commissioner Rick Shiver said what everyone in Volusia
County is probably thinking the deaths of lead mechanic Eric Johnson
and maintenance worker Clyde Jones in an explosion at the city's
Bethune Point wastewater-treatment plant constitute one of the worst
tragedies to hit the city. City officials know what caused the
explosion. Sparks from a cutting torch being used to repair the roof
above a chemical tank ignited methanol fumes seeping from a vent.

I don't know the whole story, but if this is about Mr Neil Cohen contacted me directly via e-mail on 10/08/07 asking if I wanted to buy some of the stuff, and I almost bought one TS2068 from him. Maybe he contacted people directly instead of posting here?
The only reason I didn't buy anything from him was because it took him 4 months to reply to my e-mail and another 7 to reply to my 2nd e-mail. By that time I was already out of Sinclair-funds and had to apologize and say this:
"I'm afraid I'm not as lucky as I was last year, when I had extra funds to continue my Sinclair collection... I appreciate remembering me but I'm not in the position of spending money on computers right now. Please accept my apologies. I'm sure that someone at the TS group or eBay will give that TS a good home."
I don't know the gentleman, but maybe he's been going a tough period and doesn't have the time to think about these things?

If Mr Neil Cohen is indeed the one the group is trying to contact, there's a good chance this is his webpage:

I sent the guy (Neil, I guess) an e-mail every few months, for a couple years
(as well as checking this newsgroup) and I finally got tired of being ignored.
As I remember, on the very rare occasion he would mention the items in the
Group, he was always promising to sell them "in the future".
If I'm wrong, though, I would certainly welcome some evidence that the items
were actually SOLD and proceeds going to where they rightly belong -- Eric's
widow.

I volunteer to take pictures, digitize everything and get help documenting all hardware. I'll even cover the costs of having it sent to Spain and back. I don't do it by myself. Everything I've done (and I don't think is enough) wouldn't be possible without my friends help. This is what I've been doing for the past 3 years:
-Got permission from Mr David to scan and place Sync online as PDF files for everyone to access. Anyone who has Sync magazines and wants to help should contact Andrew Owen at WOS. He's working on a new Timex archive which will have a similar structure to the Spectrum one, courtesy of Martjin Heide.
-Scanned and uploaded newsletters and .TZX files of cassettes that weren't available online.
-Sent several Timex items to my friend Jose Leandro in Spain, and all those items are now photographed, documented and available for everyone to download as schematics, board diagrams and eagle files. Check out http://www.speccy.org/hardware/ or http://www.speccy.org/trastero/2007/261007/261007.htm as a few examples.
-Sent cassettes to my friend Jose Manuel in Spain who scanned the inlays and preserved software that was apparently lost for many years, for example, the software for the Timex RS232 interface.
-Sent all my Timex cartridges to Spain where Jose Leandro (who built a Timex cartridge reader) preserved them as .DCK files and are now available for everyone to use in emulators or copy back to cartridges
-Initiated a new Portuguese discussion group to try to find out what's going on in Portugal and what could be done to preserve even more. I've gotten better responses from walls and rocks.
-Tried to find some of the key people from Timex Portugal, but they've proven hard to find. I haven given up yet.
I mention these things not to praise myself, but to show that some of us do care. And because of people like Andrew Owen, Jose Leandro, Jose Manuel, Jack Boatwright and others, Timex material is being preserved. Pictures is not enough. How do you feel when you see the pics section of this group and see things that you'll never touch or use, only in your dreams? We need more than that.
If I can get my hands on things that haven't been preserved yet, I won't hide them away in storage to get them full of dust, or proudly go to newsgroups and sites just to say what I have. I will work to share what I have, and cover all the costs involved while I'm at it.
Right now Andrew Owen is re-organizing everything that we have for all the Timex clones. All programs, games, books, magazines, pictures, newsletters, etc, etc. I'm going to help him as much as I can, and I invite everyone him to do the same.
Let's preserve these things while we can.

Bruno,
I admire your dedication to the cause. The TS2068 was my first
computer. It played an important role in my past and has contributed
largely to where am I today. Your message has inspired me to go dig out
my collection to see if I can contribute anything to the cause, though I
doubt I have any of those "special" rare items that are so intriguing.
On the other hand, I did belong to a user group in Toronto that was very
technical and produced a great newsletter. There may be some gems in
there worth sharing. One in particular stands out in my memory - a
video digitizer board. Though nothing special by today's standards,
this DIY board could be built rather easily and placed into the
cavernous free space of the 2050 modem. It provided the ability to
digitize (B&W) a composite signal. I started, but never finished this
project. I think I have the documentation and even the unfinished
board. Remarkable because at the time you'd have to spends hundreds
of dollars to get your PC or Apple to do the same. I'll try to get to
it this weekend and post some info.

I haven't ignored any questions regarding the collection. I was without internet access for quite a while which may explain not answering any questions regarding the items. At the same time, I have a business to run that has been severely effected by the economic downturn and am currently in the process of starting up a new one. Maybe you don't know what it is like to struggle to make a mortgage payment, and I hope you never do, but the bank ain't gettin my house! Screwing around with bins of computers and parts IS time consuming and if you go to the uploaded photos page of this group, you will see that I uploaded pictures of the first items that I would like to dispose of within the last 6 months. I got no responses or questions on those uploads and certainly figured that no one was interested in those items. They're still here taking up space in my garage that could be used by other junk. I have also decided that e-bay is not going to be a part of the disposal process, nor is Craigslist. Eric and I were friends for over 25 years whether you know it or not and I was a guest in his home many a time. I no longer live 10 miles from where his home was in Orange City, FL. I am 70 miles from that location. Jack?..I need a little help here please.

Hey Niel,
I'm glad to hear you've not dropped off the list - please understand
that there has been little communication from your side, and when that
happens people start to make up or assume things. I apologize for
assuming that Eric's collection had disappeared into the ether.
I don't think anyone here is immune to life issues and we're all
working hard to pay the bills and wondering if the next paycheck will
come or not; no one is complaining about your priorities.
Finally, I don't recall you posting the photos of Eric's collection or
mentioning that they were available for purchase. Are these the ones
you mention

Or these uploaded by kmitl22?

Greetings,
You have said that Mrs. Johnson and daughter have moved, are they doing o.k.? I have called them a few times after Eric passed away, however, it wasnt long and I to found that the number was disconnected.
Where ever they are, I wish them well. My family and I have stopped to visit Eric and his family twice in the past, Great family.

Hey Niel,
I'm glad to hear you've not dropped off the list - please understand
that there has been little communication from your side, and when that
happens people start to make up or assume things.

All,
In the many converstations I had with Eric prior to his passing he did not
specify what was to happen to his collection. He did give me quite a list
of items, mostly parts, over time.
The day of his passing his wife called and told me that Eric wanted me to
be aware and would know what to do. That made me believe that Eric wanted
me to take control. Unfortunately I could do nothing at that time as I am
across the country in Oregon and was finacially unable to do anything. I
spoke with Mrs. Johnson briefly shortly after the funeral, but she wanted
the Timex items gone as soon as practical. Eric had mentioned Neil in
conversations so when Neil posted his message I sort of had a sigh of
relief knowing that the items should be safely attended to.
Today I am finacially more stable and would be more than happy to store
anything and everything as I now have a place for it all that is usable
for testing, cataloging and possible repair. I am not a repair facility
so please don't ask right now. Maybe in the future I can get into that
side of things.
I have seen nothing of the items Eric mentioned anywhere (eBay, etc.) so I
believe that Neil is true to his word.
I agree that the items from Eric's collection should be cataloged,
photoed, and made available as needed to keep our real machines working.
Hope this helps,
Jack

The things you mentioned (bad economy, starting new business, deceased realtive) are part of LIFE, and they will continue forever and ever. The items will never be sold if you waiting until no life-events occur. Why weren't some items sold back when the economy was GOOD?
I made no "accusations". I only stated facts, as well as asking a question (has a trust been breached? and has the person kept the items himself?). As can be seen, there are many others on this message board who have also been wondering when any of the items would be sold.
Until they have been sold, they have indeed been "kept". I really wouldn't think much about it, but at various times in the past, Neil has said he would be selling them "after tax season" or "beginning of next year" or "this spring" or whatever (I made up a couple of those, but they are similar to what we heard...on the rare occasion that we *did* hear anything at all).
Again, I made no accusations, but I am happy to offer an apology for quesioning Neil's integrity...as long as Neil, too, can admit that when one takes upon a responsibility to liquidate a deceased person's items, it should be done in a shorter time than 3 years.

In your e-mail you mentioned the problems you had been going through but I didn't want to expose those details in public because I didn't think it would be right. I did suggest that you could be going through times, though. If my post sounded like an accusation, I apologize.
Jack, if anything goes to you, I know it's going to a good home.

Well for the entrepreneur in me and ex-solicitor, this is correct - it is only fitting that these items be sold to raise additional funds for the family, if only to reflect the years they had to put up with his collection (lol)
I would be willing to purchase the lot and get them shipped over to the UK, although I am still not certain what there is in order to place a value on them. They would then be offered in job lots on ebay / here....

I think some of us are forgetting just exactly *whose* property this is. It's the *widow's* property -- not mine, yours, Neil's, or anyone else's to GIVE away (unless the widow specifically GAVE someone something from the collection). And the purpose of transferring the bulk of the collection to anyone else, is not as a "gift" but as a Trustee, so that the items can be sold into the Timex/Sinclair community which will continue to cherish and preserve those items (with MONETARY proceeds going to the widow).
Whether or not she needs the money...it is rightfully hers (minus any expenses incurred to sell or repair the items before sale). As the ridiculous stock market has shown us, our families can feel "wealthy" one day...and feel fairly "poor" the next! I have many good friends in the classic computer/classic gaming community, but if I pass away before my wife, I would hope that my items are properly sold, with the VALUE of my items going to my family (again, except if my wife wishes to make a specific gift or two to certain closest friends).

The only thing I fault the fellow who teased us with this stuff is that I can remember distinctly that at least twice he came into the group and listed the stuff that was left to him from Eric's collection, asked what people wanted from the list, and then just vanished. All I wanted was a stupid microdrive and got myself on the list.
If he had/has other plans for the Timex/Sinclair stuff, either for him or for the widow that is fine. But to just kind of leave people hanging is pretty strange IMHO. At this point knowing what I know about the circumstances surrounding the collection I would be happy to see the stuff go up on Ebay and the proceeds left to the widow. Then we could bid for it or not. Obviously anyone willing to pay decent money for some of the rarer items is a collector and would take good care of the stuff.

Yes, if Neil doesn't have the time (and after 3 years the evidence would suggest he doesn't), then the items should be transferred to someone else with unquestionable integrity for the purpose of examination, cataloging and sale. Proceeds to the widow, of course. If Jack Boatwright is willing, I think he would fit the bill. Either a newsgroup auction, or ebay auction (ebay would reach a broader audience, although the newsgroup might be the sentimental favorite -- and would incur no auction fees). The person taking the trouble to sell the items (the Auction Seller) could enjoy, say, a 15% discount on his purchase of any items sold. That way, anyone else would need to bid more than 15% higher than the Auction Seller was willing to pay, in order to purchase a certain desired item.
Just my thoughts.

Neil, if she GAVE you all the stuff, then fine, you are doing the right thing by keeping it all.
However, if she expected that you would sell most of the stuff, then, after 3 years have passed...don't you think you should either respect her wishes and sell some of the stuff, or if you don't have the time or motivation, just let somebody sell it who *will* respect her wishes?
But maybe, after so much time has passed, you can now call her up and maybe she would tell you, "Neil, it has been so long I have just put this behind me and you can just keep it all". Sometimes after people wait soooo long, they are willing to just give up on having it happen, so you may indeed have "waited her out" long enough to keep all the items.
So, if she told you that she didn't care if you kept all of Eric's items, please let us know, so we can drop the issue and forget about it. But if she didn't tell you to keep all the stuff...please, man, respect Eric's memory enough to handle the matter as Eric's widow asked you to do.

It seems that Neil has clammed up, regarding what he is going to do with the items he was *supposed* to sell for Mrs. Johnson (Eric's widow).
Doesn't speak well of his character.

I wanted to buy some of those items last year, but I got a message saying that the profile for that user didn't exist....
I had no idea the Mr Neil I was talking with was the same one that uploaded the pictures..

So, Neil, how about a detailed list of these items, complete
with condition and other details? As far as pricing, are
you planning on taking the highest offer, the first offer,
or what?

I'm sorry, just to be clear here, are you trying to say that the only way
that you notified the group was by uploading the PDFs to the files section?
I think it's safe to say that the vast majority here are always on the
lookout for new additions to our collections and stuff is always quickly
snatched up. The same would have surely happened here if it was more
obvious. Anyway, the point is moot. As someone else just asked, are you
presently making anything still available, and if so, what? Thanks.

This is a larken ramdisk, you still need larken cartridge to get it work.

This is Timex FD Disk interface, the same as the picture label rs232, you still need 3" disk drive, power supply, interface board and twister board to work with ts2068

In the pictures there is a complete FDD system.
A 220v power supply, the controller (marked as RS232), the interface
(marked again as RS232) and a disk drive with no box with a disk.
You can use a DSDD 3,5" disk drive and use 3,5" disks as 40 track
(140K) or 80 tracks format (640K) with a data cable adapter and power
adapter.

There is a lot of errors in this "list".
Timex 1000-2068 Misc.Hardware2.pdf
Timex RS232 interface uses the same package as TS1016.
That is a Timex Interface for use with the Timex FDD/FDD3000 and it
would have a 2068 routine ROMs because of the silver reset button
The silver big box is a FDD controller.
Timex 1000-2068 Misc.Hardware3.pdf
That is not a TC2068, it is a TC2048. TC2068 uses the same silver
case as TS2068. Black 2068's have the same size as silver 2068.
Timex 1000-2068 Misc.Hardware4.pdf
that rubber keyboard is for ZX Spectrum, not TS1500.
TimexHardwareP1.pdf
TS2040 is not a modem, it's a printer. The modem was labeled TS2050

My hope is that these things will make their way to an auction.
Thanks for clarity, though, guys, on what's actually in those pictures.

>

I small question if I may? Suppose your ideas were implemented. To whom would the proceeds of the auction be sent? Will your crystal ball tell us where Eric's widow lives and her phone number? Or did you miss the part about her moving and not providing contact information?
As for integrity, Neil and I have had a couple of long conversations, and he is indeed the Neil Cohen whom I knew. I will vouch for his integrity. Why do you give the impression that Boatwright's integrity is beyond reproach? I'm not saying it isn't, but I would be interested in your personal insight gained from at least 10 years of you knowing him personally. Or are you just tossing out a familiar name on this forum?
You idea of the 15% is flawed if it were for ebay for obvious reasons. First of all let us say a TS2068 had a high bid of $100. That would mean that the seller/auctioneer would get it for $85, but under ebay rules, the high bidder wins and the seller cannot bid himself. So how would this be implemented? Is there going to be a reserve? How many photos will there be? Will Paypal be accepted? Will the widow take the hit for the listing fees, photo fees, Paypal fees, and expenses to turn Paypal into cash? Is the only compensation going to be the discount and what if the seller/organizer has everything he needs for his collection? How then will he be compensated, a flat fee or a percentage of the sale price?
Do you have much experience selling on ebay? I ask because I don't think you have thought this through.
Neil asked me if I could visit Florida and help him with the sale. At present, health problems prevent that but I would love to see Eric's collection again after 20 years. He always had some neat stuff, much of which I could not afford way back then.
If somebody else would take over the auctioning, who is going to pack it up, ship it, and pay for shipping? Wouldn't a better solution be for somebody on this forum who lives close enough to Central Florida and is knowledgeable about Timex things help Neil with the auction?

Just wanted you to know that I received the 2 computers and 2 RAM packs. It took a while to get back to you because I don't drive now and had to use a walker to get to the post office on a day that wasn't raining.
Then I wanted to check everything out. First problem was that I needed to find a connector to connect the twin lead connectors to a cable connector because my modern TV set does not have anyplace to screw on the twin terminal leads (the antenna has a cable end connector). I must have at least 5 of those things around here but darn it if they didn't just up and walk away (or something).
The boxed computer worked perfectly as did both RAM packs in spite of the fact that the unboxed RAM pack had a burn hole in it.
The loose computer booted up but there is no keyboard response. I haven't started to open it up yet to track down the cause of the failure. That was to be expected as Eric did a lot of repair work and only he knew which computers stacked wherever worked and which did not. I can't blame him as I tend to keep those type of details in memory also. On the obviously used ones you place your money, spins the wheel and takes your chances all the while praying like hell.
By the way, the package came a bit faster than regular first class postage from Florida which usually takes about 5 days to Newton Falls. [It's a small city (up from a village by one person) with only 5001 people and the postal service is as laid back as small town in the Deep South.] Of course I think half of Ohio's population moved to Florida anyway.
Thanks and good work.
