1. Silly question

\ · Fri, 03 Mar 2006 12:21

Trying to test one of my SE Basic programs over on my T/S 2068 (US), I've
noticed something silly. When the program loaded, as expected it gave me
"Nonsense in Basic" for the SE Basic commands that are on a different
token. I tried to edit them, and being completely not used to the T/S
keyboard (I've had my original Spectrum upgraded to Spectrum + when that
kit came out and therefore I am used in having separate Delete, Cursor and
EDIT keys among others) I added a number in front of a line while trying
to move the cursor. Trying to delete the extra number, this instead
produced the keyword DELETE and it would not delete anything. Only placing
a REM at the line helped and then I deleted it altogether. Moreover by
investigating further I saw that it will not delete colons if followed by
numbers.
I suspect that this is a bug affecting the editors of all US T/S machines,
but I cannot be sure. Can someone please verify if that IS the case indeed
and if not, were there a different ROM version than the one I have that
has this problem fixed?
Finally, I loaded the other day Basic 64. However I was completely lost as
there is no manual to speak of anywhere on the net (at least I did not
find it). Does anyone have the manual? If it's in electronic form I would
appreciate if it could be emailed to me. If not, I would gladly pay to get
a photocopy of it.

Cheers,

Phoebus

Not exactly. The Spectrum SE is the specification for the "successor" to
the ZX Spectrum as conceived by Andrew Owen (that also has a prototype).
One can be built starting usually with a TC2068/2048 but AFAIK the T/S2068
should be possible to be converted as well.
It builds on the T/S specification (more colors/higher resolution) and
adds some knicknacks ;-) as well...
(Sorry Andrew if I misrepresented it).
The SE Basic ROM is supposed to be the native Basic for the Spectrum SE.

Cheers,

Phoebus

Wow! Sounds wonderful. I have done some research on the web as well. The only question is, is there any software that can take advantage of the added extra features.. I wanted to see a 2068 program that took advantage of the high resolution modes but I didn't find anything very impressive. I also have a +3 that I am planning to turn into a +3e but I am trying to findout if I can actually add an SD Card reader instead of a harddisk. I have a bunch of 512M and one 1GB SD card.

Wow. I am impressed. I wish there was an easy way to port stuff written for other Z-80 computers to run on an SE. As for the +3e CF adapter, I would not mind buying a CF card. I wish the +3e ROMs had support for large storage units, ie : 512MB without dividing into so many little user areas or partitions. Just like the LOADER option in the main menu, it would be sooo cool if the +3e ROM added a IDE loader that read FAT or NTFS partitions and could do TZX or TAP files... Aahhhh... I get carried away with unrealistic dreams all the time. Gosh, I can't believe the Speccy is now 24 yars old... and I am 30!

It's complicated. You need to get a IDE-CF adaptor and plug an SD-CF adaptor in to that,
but it will work. Probably cheaper to just get the CF adaptor and a CF card. In any case you
won't be able to read the card on anything besides the +3e as it is CP/M formatted.

I am still playing with it. I didn't know it had the 128 menu and basic editor etc. Very cool. In fact although I would like to keep my TS-2068 intact, I am planning to buy another one on Ebay now, to turn it into an SE machine. That will be a great project for the long winter nights

Well you have 272K to play with so it probably just means modifying the I/O, screen and
paging routines. Anything written on Z88DK should be easy to port.

That's a limitation of the CP/M filesystem

You don't want to use NTFS partitions on any machine at all ever. Trust me. As for FAT, it's
90% done, but development has stopped and Garry is offline for the forseeable future.

Who says it's unrealistic. You can do it on any Speccy using divIDE which supports FAT-16
and .TAP files.

Hi all,

The Spectrum SE is a modestly enhnaced ZX Spectrum specification designed to be built
from off the shelf components. SpeccyBOB is a reasonable starting point for such a
project. The SE is emulated in the FUSE emulator so there is already a powerful
development environment available. The prototype is based on a Timex Portugal TC2048,
but in theory any machine could be modified to meet the SE Specification.

> Wow! Sounds wonderful. I have done some research on the web as well. The only
> question is, is there any software that can take advantage of the added extra features.

Software is thin on the ground. Although lots of people expressed an interest in such a
machine, which is why I built it, no-one has actually written any software for it besides
myself and Alvin Albrecht. However Paul Farrow and Dr. Beep have kindly allowed me to
port some of their software and JGH has enabled support in his port of BBC Basic (Z80).
The current software for the SE is emulators (ZX80, ZX81/TS1000, Jupiter ACE, TC2068),
BBC Basic (Z80) which is mostly compatible with BBC Basic on the BBC Master. And a
conversion of Shadow of the Unicorn. There is the potential to do much more, but no-one
has risen to the challenge yet.

> I wanted to see a 2068 program that took advantage of the high resolution modes but I
> didn't find anything very impressive.

I'm working on a front end that will allow a split Hi-Res/Hi-colour screen for graphic
adventure games with 80 column text. I probably won't have time to write any games for it
though.

The DELETE thing is not a bug, it is a feature... When you press
DELETE with the K cursor on the screen, the keyword DELETE appears
(used by itself, this command can delete whole lines, like in DELETE
2000, or DELETE 2000,3000, and the like.

To delete line numbers and the colon, you have to keep CAPS SHIFT and
"0" pressed for a while, until the auto-repeat feature kicks in. It is
a little strange when you are accostumed to the Spectrum, but after a
while you get the hang of it.

16. T/S 2068 bugs and response to "Silly question"

Edwin Krampitz, Jr. · Sat, 04 Mar 2006 07:13

Agree with you, but even the factory Timex 2068 Technical Manual
referred to the DELETE command behavior as a bug. Section 6.6.5, page
145: "Since the ROM code cannot be corrected, you must try releasing
and pressing the DELETE key at differing frequencies and you will be
able to get past this 'bug'."

Here are other general bugs listed:

6.6.1. "Pressing ENTER multiple times with an invalid tape command on
the edit line (syntax error) causes the system to reset . . . due to
overflowing the Bank Status Stack in RAM Chunk 3/7 . . . It shouldn't
take anybody that many tries to get a tape command right, so this is
not a real problem, but you may want to keep it in mind."

6.6.2. "If a non-existent line number is specified [after the command
ON ERR GOTO], followed by an error, the system will hang. The ROM code
is in an endless loop trying to report the absence of a valid error
handler to the non-existent error handler!"

6.6.3.  "Parameters to the SOUND command are not fully validated;
therefore, you can specify a number beyond the valid range for a given
operation and not get an error . . ."

6.6.4. "The INTEGER function for (-65536) gives an incorrect result
of -1, and for other cases where the result should be -65536, it gives -
1E-38. Since the ROM code cannot be changed, there is no correction."

6.6.5. "If you respond to the SCROLL? message using multiple keys such
as Cap Shift/2 or Cap Shift/Symbol Shift, you will get strange results
like dumping of the Edit Line with the 'C' or 'E' cursor, display of
ROM data, or multiple scrolls. Stick to single key responses and you
won't have any problems!"

6.6.6. Summarized above.

Hi

> Now I have to find out what divIDE is.

http://baze.au.com/divide/

It is in the new Spectrum SE specification (and emulated by the current FUSE beta).

> By the way I downloaded FUSE on my Mac immediately to get a flavor of SE. I am still

Actually I think the 128 editor is a bit rubbish. It's there for compatibility. The Basic is the
original version from the 48K machine (also for compatibility) which the editor is patched
to use. SE Basic gives you most of the functionality of the 128 editor and includes the
DELETE, RENUM and SOUND commands (among others).
Also if you switch the screenmode and reset the machine it should go back to the normal
Spectrum screen (although there was an incorrect byte in the ROM with the last release I
got).

This is the reference for the machine as emulated by FUSE:

It's a tricky conversion. But it would be nice to have a slightly bigger user base than one
(me). If you don't have any cartridge software then the only reason not to upgrade is if you
want to keep your machine pristeen. The TS-2068 emulator will run any software you
currently have without any problems.

At present none of the Spectrum SE software is available on-line. Would anyone object if I
uploaded it to this group's files section?

The software in question is:

ZX80 emulator
ZX81/TS1000/TS1500 emulator
Jupiter Ace emulator
TC2068/TS2068 emulator
BBC Basic (Z80)
Shadow of the Unicorn
SE Basic (final beta)
Alvin Albrecht's Sprite Pack

As was pointed out, there is a bug in the Timex 2068 DELETE command. I believe it only shows its ugly side when trying to delete characters in a very long edit line. Also noted here, the Timex 2068 Technical Manual indicated the work around was to change the frequency when pressing the DELETE key. If you had a large number of characters to delete (more than a hundred or so) this was a very, very slow and frustrating process.

Anyway, a fellow named Jack Dohany fixed the DELETE bug a long time ago, possibly in the mid to late 1980's. He sold an 32k EPROM with both the Spectrum and the corrected Timex code in it. An external switch was used to enable either of the two 16k ROM images. I have this EPROM and it works great.

If his name is not familiar, he's the fellow that modified the MSCRIPT word processor code and wrote the disk loading software so MSCRIPT and Word Master would work on the various 2068 disk systems available in the USA and Canada. He also supplied a Timex 2068 version of the Spectrum program named KEYWORD - a great single key entry program to spell out the commands one character at a time. It was a very useful program if your keyboard had worn-out labels or if you had updated your keyboard to a real one.

Reading these e-mails brought a flood of fond and not so fond memories of the 2068 computer and my earlier years working with it.

19. DivIDE

These day I am drooling over the divIDE interface. I would love to buy one but I can't find a link or anything to buy one online. Aahhh, if only it also handled TZX files... It is an amazing interface. I used to think that the +3e was soooo awesome, but divIDE is "awesomer" heheh

Does anybody have a divIDE interface for sale ?
