1. Sound Via TV Output for 2068?

Adam Trionfo · Wed, 5 Apr 2017 18:30:

I've been playing games on my T/S 2068 for the past few days. Mostly, I've just been messing around with the few that have been developed for the 2068 (which I think are all ports of Spectrum games). I've also been using a few Spectrum programs via the Spectrum emulation cartridge. I've noticed some issues dealing with colors, but I was aware of these issues already. I'm used to the graphics on this system, but I just can't get used to the internal speaker, which can't be adjusted for volume control. That's the big problem: it's sometimes just too loud.

Yesterday, I loaded a game called Blind Alley. It's sort of like the Tron light cycles (think, Surround on the Atari 2600, or Checkmate on the Bally Arcade/Astrocade). The moment the game loaded, my wife, who was across the house yelled, "What is that!?!" I don't blame her: the game makes a really annoying screeching noise on startup and during gameplay. I turned the game off immediately!

You can hear this annoying sound/music/screech by watching this video of the Spectrum version of Blind Alley (which sounds exactly the same):

What is the easiest way to adjust the speaker's volume on the Timex Sinclair 2068? As far as I can tell, there is no way built into the system to do this. I can't be the only one who is bothered by the nonadjustable sound. I imagine that there were probably several fixes/workarounds for this issue in the 1980s. Here are some possibilities that some folks might do to reduce the volume of the speaker:

1) Unhook the speaker for no sound at all. I don't want to do that.

2) Add a volume adjustment to the internal speaker via a potentiometer or some other similar method. This sounds like a good idea. Are there any plans for this?

3) Route the output of the sound to the speaker to the TV... not sure how. Maybe via an internal mod or through the expansion connector. I like this idea best. Are there any plans for this available?

I'd really like to continue to play with the T/S 2068, but I'll have to pack it away if I can't figure-out some way to deal with the sound, both to keep me and my wife sane.

All your solutions are valid. I'll look for the TV mod which allows you to do both a. and c. and will get back to you.
