1. Spectrum Emulator options
Steven Reardon · Tue, 6 Jan 2004 20:44:
I have heard that the 48K Spectrum ROM on cartridge that was available
for the Timex Computer 2068 (the one produced in Portugal with PAL
video), and that was included with the Unipolbrit 2086, will work in
the Timex Sinclair 2068, but that the cartridge casing is slightly too
tall to fit in the TS2068 port. The general suggestion is to shave the
casing down 'til it fits.
I'm led to understand that there are other options for Spectrum
emulation, but I don't know what they might be. Anyone have an idea of
the general availability of Spectrum emulator cartridges (you never
seem to see them on eBay), or what the other options for emulation are?

Johnny, if you like, I could host your website on www.timexsinclair.org in
its own separate directory in a similar manner that I'm hosting Alvin's
timex projects pages... Please let me know if you're interested.

No, by the ROM dump, it is a Timex 2048 EPROM.
I don't know if it have more things inside because I never open it.

Thanks Louis but not yet. I think it will be online again next month.
the URL will be timex.encarnado.com and I don't know if I will recover the
other one I had, timex.johnnyred.org :)

Hello Johnny....
When I got my Spectrum emulator rom for my TS 2068 it came with a
device that allowed one to piggy-back the TS 2068 rom with the
Spectrum emulator rom and mount both inside the computer where the
original rom sits. You switched roms by a magnetic switch. Larry
Kenny (maker of Larken DOS) had a way of doing much the same thing
which allowed one to switch roms by holding down a certain combination
of keys while powering up the computer. Perhaps one of our members
has his emulator set up in this fashion and can give you the details
on how it is done. You can forget trying to get anything from Larry
Kenny. He has devourced himself from the Sinclair computer community
and wants nothing more to do with it.
Another possibility is to locate one of the mounts that was used for
the Zabra OS-64 chip. It was specifically designed to fit inside the
cartridge dock of the TS 2068. You might be able to mount your
emulator rom on it.
Hope this helps.

In the two I have at home, there are 27128 EPROM and
74LS32 (4 OR gates).
I don't remember exactly, thus I can be wrong, but
it decodes A14, A15 and /MREQ and sets /BE=0 in
cartridge slot to disable internal ROMs.
The EPROM contents for Unipolbrit Komputer 2086 is
very upgraded ZX Spectrum ROM.

Emulating a Spectrum on a 2068 was done by adding a copy of the
Spectrum ROM inside the machine, on a cartridge or on the back bus.
You then typed an OUT xxx,xxx command to switch banks. Zebra Systems
made OS-64 cartridges which would take a Spectrum ROM but I don't
know if they ever sold them that way. I designed the "twister" board
that was sold with the Zebra disk drives which had a socket on it for
Spectrum ROMs. The board was designed to fit into a plastic VHS tape
case with the appropriate cut-outs. It proved too expensive to make
so Zebra chose to cover the bare PCB with cardboard held on with
double sided tape. It was too bad because the tape case looked really
slick when painted silver.
