Yes, I have had a ZX SPectrum that wouldn't drive a IF1+microdrive. I kept trying to repair the ZX IF1 and the Microdrive.. until one day I tried it on a friends ZX Spectrum 128.. It worked fine.. Turns out it was a faulty Z80A!!!! I couldn't believe it!! Not even the ULA. So I replaced the CPU and it worked fine. I am not saying that it is the Z80A in your case but I am saying that yes it is a possibility that it is not the drive but the 2068.

Maybe someone with a little technical knowledge can help me: my TS2068
was connected to an Oliger Expansion Board with a floppy interface,
and in the back of the expansion I had an Aerco printer interface. I
stepped on the wrong cord under the table, the printer interface moved
and short-circuited everything. After disconnecting and reconnecting
and testing, the computer itself worked fine, the printer interface is
OK, but the floppy interface is a goner. I've replaced all of the
integrated circuits on both Oliger boards, including the memory chip
and the disk controller, tested the capacitors, diodes and other
parts, checked the EPROM, but the thing is still not working.
To be more exact, it seems to be working, kind of: when I try the
simple tests recommended on the manual, the floppy controller does
what is expected (activates the drive motor and such. But when I
connect both boards, the computer doesn't boot up, I get a very
colorful screen of vertical lines. If I press the "magic button" (NMI)
the board apparently saves the snapshot or the screen to disk. But the
basic never regains control.
Now (finally) I ask: could the problem be in the computer itself, even
though it appears to be fine? Maybe in the memory bank switching
circuit? I don't know enough digital electronics to figure it out, but
maybe someone will have an idea of what could be happening...
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Paulo --
Just FYI John Oliger still repairs these units for a very
reasonable fee.
