John,
If you have the Penetrator cart, you may have the only one in existence as Timex did not release it for sale. It had bugs, then Timex quit the computer business before they were fixed.

That may be why it doesn't work. The cart's history would be interesting if you know any of it, my speculation is that it must have come from a Timex employee.

If possible post a photo of your cart.

Jack

Hi, I have a cartridge that don't seem to work. When I plug it in the normal screen just comes up like no cartridge pluged in. I believe I have it pluged correctly. I have three others that work fine. Any ideas on testing or fixing?
Thanks,
John

Hi John,

It would be great to get a copy of the contents of the cart. As it boots to BASIC it should be possible to do this using the Timex itself. You'd need to switch off interrupts, page in the various pages of the cart and copy them to RAM and then save the contents to tape, then convert that tape to a .TAP file with an emulator tool. Looking at the tape version (which is about 20K but includes a loading screen) http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=4000054 I'd guess that it uses a 16K ROM. Penetrator uses some BASIC though so the cart probably uses the banks above the screen area (2 and 3 or perhaps 3 and 4). The safest thing to do would be to dump the entire contents of the DOCK bank. If you can deal with loading the program onto the Timex and getting the results onto a PC, I can write the program.

Perhaps now would be a good time to do an inventory of carts that exist.
The booklet "Winter Issue, Timex Sinclair Computer Software" lists nine "T/S 2000 Command Cartridge" titles:
Crazybugs
The Budgeteer
States & Capitals
Flight Simulator
Pinball
Vu-Calc
Vu-File
Androids
Penetrator

and a title, "Casino I", described as an "Insta-Load Cartridge". I don't know how this cart differs from a Command Cartridge.

I have the first 5 Command Cartridge titles.

We know that Penetrator wasn't released and now we know that zanarchrist has Androids.

Does anyone have Vu-Calc, Vu-File or the Casino 1 cart ?

The Timex Computer Corp carts that we have images for (on WoS) are:

Androids
Casino 1
Chess
Crazy Bugs
Flight Simulation
Horace and the Spiders
Hungry Horace
Pro Pinball
States & Capitals

However, Chess, Horace and the Spiders, and Hungry Horace are almost certainly the ports I did of the Spectrum IF2 carts. I ported all 10 IF2 carts and released all the non-Ultimate titles. I also did a 64K cart port of Shadow of the Unicorn. To date I think that's the only 64K cart.

I know Vu-Calc and Vu-File were announced, but I thought the consensus was that they were never released. I'm tempted to recreate them.

Well I managed to reconstruct the Budgeter AROS cart. If the program was not changed for the cartridge release then this version will be functionally identical. I've tested it and it works. Thanks to Johnny Red for the details on how AROS works.

The merit is not mine. I got the info from someone I can't remember and published on my website :)
Glad someone can work it that info :D

And I've also managed to make a working Penetrator cart. I suspect Timex was trying to do an AROS version, but the code needs to run in RAM so I created an LROS version that copies the program to 32768 and then jumps to 32765 where there are instructions to page out the DOCK bank. I also NOPed out the instruction to set a blue border and the loop during the key test, so now it goes straight to the fireworks.

The VU-Calc, VU-File, Sword Fight and Penetrator cartridges, although announced, were not released for sale by Timex Computer Corp. and probably should be considered vaporware. Of those four I believe that only Penetrator was in development when Timex left the computer business so it's possible a that proto-type exists.

Please see the 2068 software list at http://www.worldofspectrum.org/timex/ts2068.htm Cartridges are at the bottom of this list.

    John,
If you have the Penetrator cart, you may have the only one in existence as Timex did not release it for sale. It had bugs, then Timex quit the computer business before they were fixed.

That may be why it doesn't work. The cart's history would be interesting if you know any of it, my speculation is that it must have come from a Timex employee.

If possible post a photo of your cart.

    Jack

Swordfight seems to rely quite heavily on the original ROM. I've created an AROS cart version, but it crashes as soon as it makes the first 'incorrect' ROM call to 1601 (which is 1230 in the Timex ROM). With a debugger that halts when the PC goes to the ROM area it should be possible to fully patch the game to work from tape or cartridge. If anyone fancies having a go I can send them the .dck file in its current state.

Both the VU programs use basic with machine code hooks that live outside the area permitted by the AROS system, so they would have had to have been implemented as LROS cartridges or substantially rewritten. That might explain why they were never released.

Hi, the seven cartridges listed as released at the bottom of the list are the only ones I can tell for sure that exist (I have six and also have seen and hold in my hand the seventh); even more, I've seen a picture of the cartridges all together somewhere in the Web.
But I'd like to know if Timex released a Spectrum Emulator cartridge for the TS-2068. There is a TC-2068 official cartridge (http://www.timexsinclair.org/peripherals/SpectrumRom/SpectrumEmulatorCart-Production.jpg), but I didn´t see it for the TS. In fact, I use a non-official one.

Timex Computer Corp never released a Spectrum Emulator Cartridge, only Timex of Portugal did it with the TC2068 and as you should know it can't be used on a TS2068 because it doesn't fit (but it works).

Another Cartridge for the 2068 is the TimeWord word processor also released by Timex of Portugal. It doesn't fit too on a TS2068.

I'm looking to acquire two TS2068 carts: Androids and Casino I. I can trade Flight Simulator, States&Capitals or Crazy Bugs. If anyone has a spare of either of these and wants any of the others let me know.

That's right, the 7th cartridge was shown to me and I had it in my hand for a moment. It was the Pinball one. I had the opportunity to see and hold the cartridge, but couldn't buy it at the moment and, therefore, lost the chance. Well, it wasn't the last cartridge at the moment, I had only four titles then.

Johnny Red is correct, the cartridges from TMX Portugal are too thick to fit into the cartrige port of the TS2068. The port has to be enlarged to use them on the US machine.

Pinball seems to be a pretty rare cartridge. I've only seen one or two on eBay since 1996. And, it may not exist as a cassette-based program as I've never seen it on cassette. If anyone has this on cassette please let me know.

Jack,

I don't have the Pinball cart in its box, just stacked on the shelf with the others, but I might have the empty box "in storage". All the instructions are in a binder and I probably have them...somewhere.

I might as well tell everyone now that I and Bruno Florindo recently arranged to have the TS gear stored with the late Jay Shepard brought to my place. Jay had previously received the remaining stock from RMG Enterprises after Rod Gowen passed on. Jay also received a few orphans from other TS users and of course had a large collection of TS items himself. In total there were 30 large boxes of TS-related items: TS1000 h/w and s/w, TS2068 h/w and s/w, QL h/w and s/w and even a few things for the Z88 including a nice working Z88. There are also 10 2068s and 4 QLs and even one lonely 1000. Bruno and I intend to offer these items to any TS user who wants the items and only ask for a small amount to reimburse our costs to truck the items to my home in Delta BC from Iowa. In the next day or so we will post a list of the items. Just to whet your appetite, as we're talking about TS2068 carts, there are about 35 carts of various titles amongst the items. Bruno and I have no intention of "making a profit" but only desire to give this stuff a good home rather than see it go to the landfill. Hopefully we will recover our costs. Stay tuned.

Jack Boatwright · Mon, 8 Aug 2011 18:57:

Rod,

A little bit of correction to your post...Rod Gowen is alive and well. I just spoke to him 2 or 3 weeks ago. He just wasn't making money any more selling TS-related items and has moved on to other things.

J Shepard got QL and some 2068 items from Rod G. and I got 1000 and 2068 items. I also bought the remaining FWD Computing stock from Frank Davis. Sad to hear that J has passed, I had not heard. He was a nice man.

The day Eric Johnson had his fatal accident, his wife called me, at his request, to come get his stuff (Eric's uncle worked for Timex Computer Corp). But the logistics were not favorable, he lived in Florida and I am in Oregon, and I couldn't make it work at that time. That's how Neil Cohen ended up with Eric's items. Eric's things include the chips needed to repair most of the Timex-related computer items.

I'm thinking that some day it would be good to get all 3 of these "collections" together under one roof. Perhaps the community would/could be better served that way.

Jack

Jack,

I met Rod Gowen on a number of occasions and am very pleased to hear that he hasn't gone on to the next adventure just yet. I was led to believe, or made a mistaken assumption, that the reason the RMG stock went to Jay was because Rod had passed. Glad it's not so.

I'm not sure about the 3 collections under one roof. I've got 30 boxes in my garage right now and my wife is not amused. In my view the more these items are dispersed to those keen to use and enjoy them, the better.

I've just finished recording the inventory and testing the hardware and tomorrow will post a listing of the items on hand.

Rod,

A little bit of correction to your post...Rod Gowen
is alive and well. I just spoke to him 2 or 3 weeks ago. He just
wasn't making money any more selling TS-related items and has moved on to other
things.

J Shepard got QL and some 2068 items from
Rod G. and I got 1000 and 2068 items. I also bought the
remaining FWD Computing stock from Frank Davis. Sad to hear that J has
passed, I had not heard. He was a nice man.

The day Eric Johnson had his fatal accident,
his wife called me, at his request, to come get his stuff (Eric's uncle worked
for Timex Computer Corp). But the logistics were not favorable, he lived
in Florida and I am in Oregon, and I couldn't make it work at that time.
That's how Neil Cohen ended up with Eric's items. Eric's things
include the chips needed to repair most of the Timex-related computer
items.

I'm thinking that some day it would be good to get
all 3 of these "collections" together under one roof. Perhaps
the community would/could be better served that way.

Jack

  Jack,

I don't have the Pinball cart in its box, just
stacked on the shelf with the others, but I might have the empty box "in
storage". All the instructions are in a binder and I probably have
  them...somewhere.

I might as well tell everyone now that I and Bruno
Florindo recently arranged to have the TS gear stored with the late Jay
Shepard brought to my place. Jay had previously received the remaining
stock from RMG Enterprises after Rod Gowen passed on. Jay also received
a few orphans from other TS users and of course had a large collection of TS
items himself. In total there were 30 large boxes of TS-related items:
  TS1000 h/w and s/w, TS2068 h/w and s/w, QL h/w and s/w and even a few things
for the Z88 including a nice working Z88. There are also 10 2068s and 4 QLs
and even one lonely 1000. Bruno and I intend to offer these items to
any TS user who wants the items and only ask for a small amount to reimburse
our costs to truck the items to my home in Delta BC from Iowa. In the
next day or so we will post a list of the items. Just to whet your appetite,
as we're talking about TS2068 carts, there are about 35 carts of various
titles amongst the items. Bruno and I have no intention of "making a
profit" but only desire to give this stuff a good home rather than see it go
to the landfill. Hopefully we will recover our costs. Stay
  tuned.

Well, I'll be adding another 21 copies of Spelling I to the pile.

Dan Elliot did the occasional repair for me over the years and in fact cheerfully replaced a memory chip in a 1500 just a year or so ago. He might be available to do repairs if parts are still available.

Rod - I have at least that many boxes. I have
a 12' x 20' shop devoted to Timex stuff and still can't display it all at one
time.

The plan was to disperse the items, but when there
are over 100 copies of one program (Spelling I for the 2068) it's
tough. I give this one away when I can. Most of the stuff I got from
Rod G. isn't high on most people's want list.

The chips that Eric had, to me, are the things we
need to preserve. Some of them cannot be replaced. We need a repair
person now, as well. Eric fixed some stuff for me a few times, and there
were a couple other fellows who did repair but I pretty sure they aren't
interested anymore. I think the unavailability of parts was part of
it.

Before making our own, we sold a small number of Timex Portugal Spectrum ROM cartridges by shaving off the raised plastic piece that kept them from fitting in the cartridge slot

We then potted the cartridge and added a label to cover the hole.

Hello!

In matter of Spectrum Emulator cartridge, please note
that Portuguese one in TC2068 was installed in Home bank,
giving Spectrum compatibility at power-on. At least the
Unipolbrit Komputer 2086 avalilable in Poland had the
Spectrum ROM mapped into Home.

But the TS2068 version is located in Dock and requires
OUT 244,3. It is not easy to put the ROM into Home bank
using cartridge slot of TS2068.

Andrew - this may be simply semantics but the program at the link listed below is named "ProPinball". As you can see from my link Timex called its program simply "Pinball", http://www.worldofspectrum.org/timex/pinbcart.jpg (this is a scan of the front of Timex's "Pinball" cartridge instruction booklet that I did a few years ago). I have no doubt that these are the same program, originally created for the Spectrum. A good share of Timex's programs were originally Spectrum programs re-licensed and adapted for the 2068.

That Timex's "Pinball" exists as a cartridge is not debatable, I own one. If there is truly a tape version of this program released by Timex I would like to see a photo or scan of at least one of the following: the tape, the cassette inlay, the instructions, or the box. Until I see one of these I will remain skeptical that the tape version of Timex-released "Pinball" exists.

Jack

Both tape and cart versions are in the archive:

Hi Jack,

It's semantics in one sense. Timex seem to have had a habit of putting a different title on the box from the one within the game itself. Swordfight at Midnight becomes Swordfight and so on. Dumbing down for the US market I guess. I know what you mean about wanting evidence for a Timex tape release. It's difficult to be sure of the status of a lot of the Timex titles that were essentially Spectrum software that ran without modification.
