1. Timex 2068 cartridges... home made ones too

M. Emrah Oral · Mon, 24 Apr 2006 11:11

Hi.. Does anybody know if there is a way to make cartridges for the Timex2068 at home, with off-the-shelf components, like standard EPROMs ? Is there a circuit or PCB diagram anywhere ? I would like to make a few cartridges. (ie. ZX SPectrum emulator, Manic Miner, etc..) for the whole retro experience.

also, I have a ZX spectrum ROM ship from a real zx spectrum. I removed it from the PCB. It is in working condition. Is there a way I can use that to make a ZX spectrum emulator cartridge for my 2068 ? Are the pinouts the same as, say, a standard EPROM chip ?

  Anybody know ?

Thanks a lot.. Have a great day...

Hello!

Some time ago I have had an idea to make some universal
boards for Timex 2068 cartridges.

Yesterday I saw an offer of selling 100 29F040 memory
chips (512kB in-system reprogrammable ROM) at 0.40$ each.
Now I'm thinking what could be done with them.

You can use the ZX Spectrum ROM. AFAIK there are two
versions of it and the most common has two low level
active chip select inputs (pins 20 and 27). The pin
27 is the main difference to EPROM chip.

If you have any ideas for the cartride boards, we can
discuss them and finally make a ~50 pieces.

Do you have a target price for a finished ROM cartridge?

It would be really cool if it was possibble (?) to make a cartridge (512K ?) with a bunch of things on it. Such as multiple games (and a startup menu screen or something...) Like those ATARI 2600 cartridges where you could choose between games.. The ZX Spectrum ROM chip I have has a logo that looks awfully like the HITACHI logo, if not identical. It would be great to use it in my 2068, since it belonged to my first Speccy I got back in 1983. The speccy died long time ago, but if it's "mind" could live in my 2068, that would be very cool.

I am not sure what the "In-system programmable" part means, but if it means that the cartridges can be "flashed" with binary images using the 2068 that would be great!!

The 512kB cartridge would wake up always with one 16kB page,
where a startup menu can be placed. This gives 31 possible
"ROMs".

Hitachi ROM is OK, just the pin 27 should be connected to
/MREQ pin 20 to /DOCK and pin 22 to /RD.

The 29F040 "is a 5-volt-only in-system Flash programmable
and erasable read only memory (PEROM)", also known as
Flash EPROM. You can load ROM contents from tape and call
a procedure to move into the PEROM chip.

With extra 32kB static memory, the cardridge could use
a bit modified ZXVGS UPB. So the rest of PEROM (480kB)
would be seen as CP/M disk, writeable with SAVE * from
BASIC. ZXVGS can load .TAP and .Z80 files and do some
more. http://zxvgs.yarek.com

The target price for ZXVGS cartridge would be $25.
At this moment I have no idea for the cases that could
be used.

I have seen bare boards for the cartridges in Erics
collection that would work for what you have in
mind...after the inventory, these will be for sale.
thanks,
Neil

Tomé un TS 2068, saqué la ROM 16k, inserte en su lugar la ZX ROM.
Eso fue todo. Trabaja muy bien

I take out 16K TS2068 ROM. I placed ZX ROM instead, That´s all.
