1. Ebay listing

Howdy All,

Most members of this list know that last summer and fall Bruno and I dispersed a large collection of Timex and Sinclair items that came to us from an estate to various members of this list. I'm glad to say that 33 large cartons in my garage were reduced to 1 & 1/2 boxes and that after all was done we came out about even which was the intention. I have one 2068 remaining that the member requesting it gave up as he suddenly had more pressing uses for his cash. I've combined it with some other items and listed it on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300732354203?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1562.l2649

In fact this is a relisting as it sold once already but the buyer didn't realize how much it cost to ship something to Russia. I let him off the hook.

I will also shortly put the other remaining items on Ebay as Ebay perhaps has a wider base than this list. Everything will start at a very low price as I still want to move the remaining items as quickly as possible rather than taking them to the landfill.

Cheers,

Rod H.

Hi Rod,
Can you post a list of the remaining items?
Perhaps some of us are interested in what you still have.

Regards,
Eduardo.

I'm definitely interested since I have been in Waterbury for the last 2 weeks. I would love to bid on the 2068 it was one elegant machine that has a special quality that is hard for me to describe.

All cartridges are somewhat rare in that they don't come on the market often --people tend to hold onto them. I had quite a few cartridges I gave out in the TS Handout. It is certainly is not worth what this guy is asking. He's in the UK and probably doesn't have much experience with TS related items as the Timex Sinclair 2068 wasn't marketed there. I don't think most cartridges are worth more than $20 with a couple perhaps going for a bit more. His price is ridiculous. Fools and their money....

Cartridge rarity is a very subjective thing...how do you gauge it when so few cartridges were made for the TS2068? I have been watching the availablity of cartridges since 1983 and my feeling for rarity is as follows (for what it's worth). These are in relationship to each other:
1. Pinball - extremely rare
2. Budgeter - very rare
3. Androids - very rare
4. Casino I - rare
5. Flight Simulator - uncommon
6. Crazybugs - common
7. States & Capitals - very common
It is said that Penetrator was in the prototype stage (but had a bug) when Timex left the computer industry so it is possible that one or two of these exist.

Jack,

Do you have any thoughts about cartridges made for the 1500? I have Flight Sim and Supermath carts for the 1500 but almost never see reference to carts for the 1500 so can't get a feel for their "rarity".

  Howdy All,

Most members of this list know that last summer
and fall Bruno and I dispersed a large collection of Timex and Sinclair items
that came to us from an estate to various members of this list. I'm glad
to say that 33 large cartons in my garage were reduced to 1 & 1/2
boxes and that after all was done we came out about even which was the
intention. I have one 2068 remaining that the member requesting it gave
up as he suddenly had more pressing uses for his cash. I've combined it
with some other items and listed it on
  Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300732354203?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1562.l2649

In
fact this is a relisting as it sold once already but the buyer didn't realize
how much it cost to ship something to Russia. I let him off the
  hook.

I will also shortly put the other remaining items on Ebay as Ebay
perhaps has a wider base than this list. Everything will start at a very
low price as I still want to move the remaining items as quickly as possible
rather than taking them to the landfill.

Cheers,

Rod

Rod, etal,

IMHO - the TS1500 cartridges are unbelievably rare as is the TS1510 Cartridge Player.
I'm sure that most of us already know that the Cartridges and Player will also work with a TS1000 or ZX81 with 16K RAM and a special OUT command.

The TS1500 cartridges are:
    a.. Supermath
    b.. States & Capitals
    c.. Chess
    d.. Flight Simulator
I have seen only one 1500 cart on eBay since 1998 (Flight Simulator in original box) and the fellow running the auction listed it as a 2068 cartridge so there was very little bidding. I don't remember what the final price was but it was very low, considering what it was. I have seen 2 or 3 Cartridge Players during this time and they always seem to go for big money.

My feeling is that these are the rarest of the TS items. I seem to remember hearing (possibly from Rod Gowen, Eric Johnson or Frank Davis) that only 1,000 of each was made. Whatever the number you are correct when you say that you "... almost never see reference to carts for the 1500 ...". I feel it is because they are that rare.

Neil asked about the 2068 Penetrator bug - I don't know what it was but I discussed the cartridge with the late Eric Johnson. Neil has Eric's collection now so he has the only 2 known Penetrator cartridges.

  Jack,

Do you have any thoughts about cartridges made for the 1500? I have Flight Sim and Supermath carts for the 1500 but almost never see reference to carts for the 1500 so can't get a feel for their "rarity".

Cartridge rarity is a very subjective thing...how do you gauge it when so few cartridges were made for the TS2068? I have been watching the availablity of cartridges since 1983 and my feeling for rarity is as follows (for what it's worth). These are in relationship to each other:
  1. Pinball - extremely rare
  2. Budgeter - very rare
  3. Androids - very rare
  4. Casino I - rare
  5. Flight Simulator - uncommon
  6. Crazybugs - common
  7. States & Capitals - very common
It is said that Penetrator was in the prototype stage (but had a bug) when Timex left the computer industry so it is possible that one or two of these exist.

Jack,

Thanks for the info. The 1500 Flight Sim cart I have is BNIB and probably originally came from Rod Gowen when he passed his stock to Jay Shepard whose collection then came to me. I've had the Supermath cart, unboxed, for years along with an uncased 1500 cartridge reader. Both probably acquired at either Indianapolis, Wash DC or Portland fest. Rare is one thing but value is another. I not sure I'd get much if I decided to sell. They really are only curiosity pieces.

If you decided to sell some of your rarer items I think you would be pleasantly surprised at what they would fetch. There are collectors all over the world looking for these.

Jack,
I saw a Penetrator rom image uploaded in the files folder of the group site. It's description says that is not original.
Do you think that Neil or Eric can take an image of the original rom and upload to the files folder?

Regrards,

Eduardo,

You would have to talk to Neil. Sadly, Eric is deceased. Penetrator is also available on cassette tape for the 2068 and an image of the ROM might be gotten there. Penetrator is the same game as Red Alert for the TS1000/ZX81, it just has a few more "bells and whistles" added - and is in colo(u)r. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RED-ALERT-16K-BRAND-NEW-RARE-FOR-TIMEX-TS1000-SINCLAIR-ZX81-/360469093862?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eda1dde6

  Jack,
I saw a Penetrator rom image uploaded in the files folder of the group site. It's description says that is not original.
Do you think that Neil or Eric can take an image of the original rom and upload to the files folder?

  Regrards,
  Eduardo.

  Jack

I would gladly upload that ROM if I knew how to get the code off of the cartridge and transfer it into a PC to send. I do not have the RS 232 serial interface that I think is required to do this, however I do have several modem boards to make one with...Do PC's even have an RS-232 port anymore? Is there a different method you can share?...thanks

Neil,
If you have a little electronics knowledge you can make a conversor that can be read with any eprom programmer. Schematics can be found at http://www.speccy.org/trastero/cosas/JL/CartuchosTimex/ROM-EPROM.html
If you don't know how to make it, I can make you one and send it to you by mail.
Regrads,
Eduardo.

Eduardo,

You would have to talk to Neil.  Sadly, Eric is deceased.  Penetrator is also available on cassette tape for the 2068 and an image of the ROM might be gotten there. Penetrator is the same game as Red Alert for the TS1000/ZX81, it just has a few more "bells and whistles" added - and is in colo(u)r.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/RED-ALERT-16K-BRAND-NEW-RARE-FOR-TIMEX-TS1000-SINCLAIR-ZX81-/360469093862?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eda1dde6

Eduardo Fuentes · Mon, 2 Jul 2012 08:59:

Neil, your translation is accurate, but I only gave you the link to show you the conversor circuit (below "Esquema").
Basically having that device you connect the cartridge in one side and an EPROM programmer in the other.
With the EPROM programmer you can read the ROM content and save it to a disk file.
Unfortunatelly you don't have the possibility to make it read without an EPROM programmer.
I don't know if any electronics shop near to you can do the reading job (having got the conversor device first).

Regards,
Eduardo.

Thanks for the offer Eduardo. I do not own an EPROM reader, nor have I ever seen one used. I did go to the link that you provided. I think I got the first line translated...
"Los ordenadores Timex Sinclair TS2068 y TC2068 disponen de un puerto de expansión para introducir cartuchos. Estos cartuchos, muy diferentes a los utilizados en el Spectrum, pueden tener una capacidad máxima de 64K y estar compuesto tanto por módulos ROM como por RAM." ...
The standard Timex/Sinclair 2068 and TC 2068 have an expansion door to introduce cartridges. This card is very different than the one used in the Spectrum having a maximum capacity of 64K (guessing here) which should be enough for the ROM and the RAM....
So, am I to take from this that the pin-outs on the edge connector under the cartridge door on the TS-2068 are the same as the TC 2068? Have you tried one of these on a TS-2068 yet? How close was I on the translation and do you have a version of that page in English?
thanks,
Neil

I don't think most cartridges are worth more than $20 with a couple perhaps going for a bit more. His price is ridiculous. Fools and their money....

Hi Eduardo, I have a tech that may be able to supply the eprom reader/programmer. Is there anything specific for me to ask him about the type of eprom programmer that i need for this project?
thanks,
neil

Hi Neil. The tech would have to use an eprom reader that can read a 27C512 (or 2xC512) and save the 64K file it will produce. With that file the people here in the group can produce a .DCK file which would be a faithful digital backup of the original cartridge. The adapter shown on that page was made by my friend Jose Leandro so he could borrow the cartridges (I sent him several) and preserve their contents without having to open the case. The cartridge gets connected to the adapter and the adaptor to the eprom reader. Nowadays there are eprom readers that connect to any PC via USB, but I don't know which one supports 27C512s. Hope this helps.

P.S. I will translate the entire page if it helps getting this done.

Hi Neil,
Sorry for the delay, your mail fall in my spam folder.
I think that almost every eprom programmer can read the cartridge. TS-2068's cartriges can have a 27C512 (64Kb) eproms as a maximum capacity.
Regards,
Eduardo.

Hi Eduardo, I have a tech that may be able to supply the eprom reader/programmer. Is there anything specific for me to ask him about the type of eprom programmer that i need for this project?
thanks,

I don't think most cartridges are worth more than $20 with a couple perhaps going for a bit more. His price is ridiculous. Fools and their money....

Eduardo, I spoke with him yesterday, he says he is able to read the EPROM. I need you to contact me through my email on yahoo so as not tie up this forum with our correspondence. so we can exchange addresses and get this project rolling.

I do not have the RS 232 serial interface that I think is required to do this, however I do have several modem boards to make one with...Do PC's even have an RS-232 port anymore? Is there a different method you can share?...thanks
