1. Questions about TS2068 upgrades and mods

zxbruno · Sun, 25 Oct 2009 15:33

Instead of adding 3 or 4 interfaces and cables sticking out of the back or sides of the TS2068, I'm wondering if a few things could be done internally. Please let me know your thoughts.

-Internal twister board to replace the original backplane. Maybe the original could be carefully cut and removed and the new, Spectrum compatible edge connector would be firmly, permanently installed inside.
-Internal 48K rom and rom switch, but different from the one we've seen before. Instead of magnets(!), a real switch would be placed on the side or back of the TS2068.
-Mod to make the TS2068's AY work with the same ports as 128K Spectrums, or internal installation of the new Zaxon AY-Magic sound interface (since the ports are different, 128K AY emulation could be achieved without canceling the original TS2068's AY.
-Internal DivIDE+. The CF slot or IDE port (or both) could replace the cartridge port or share it if possible.

And a few questions for TS1000 and TS2068 users:

-How many of you would be interested in buying a twisterboard? Rich Mellor has my new one in the U.K. and will be supplying them at some point.
-How many of you would be interested in having an AY sound interface for your TS1000, TS1500 or ZX81? Programming-wise it would use the same ports as the AY in 128K Spectrums. It wouldn't be like the previous ZX81 AY interfaces from back in the day.

And finally, if someone has a Timex computer in excellent condition and would be willing to scan the whole keyboard and the surrounding area, please contact me. I would like to try to do something in Photoshop that can help those of us who want to print something to restore the look of their computer.

Thanks!

I would be happy if it could be done with one external box containing
all.

Depends on cost. It will always be beyond of what I'm willing to pay
to keep it "running"...

I agree it must be external, but it can be done in modules, to make it possible for 'the ones'(some people[i included myself] from the list already have a lot of intefaces from zx spectrum) that already have a DivIde+(or ZXCF,or other [I have AY magic]), or a ROM switch made internaly or by cartridge(emulator)... just like the Oliger Interface, you just conncet what you wish (multiple connections)...

I don't normally do this but thought folks should know (if they didn't already) that these membranes that Rich has for the ZX Spectrum work perfectly for the TS 1500 as well.

You mean the key matrix is the same on both?

Yes it's the same.

You can take a ZX Spectrum keyboard and plug it in a TS1500 and it
will work. ZX Spectrum Plus/128K+ keyboard also. Some keys don't work
because TS1500 do not "know" the key combination.

A correction in these informatiom...
Is not exactly as said....The keyborard membrane is the same as the ZX Spectrum 16kn or 48kb(speccy) or even the ZX Spectrum+(plus), but not any of the models of the 128kb(the +2 or +3 have a very different connector, is very wide).

Just to clarify... (thanks for the original mention by the way)...

The keyboard membrane for the 48K rubber key ZX Spectrum will fit a TS1500 without any problems as a replacement for its existing membrane.

The keyboard membrane for the Spectrum+ would also fit into the sockets and could be used also PROVIDED you used a ZX Spectrum+ (48K or 128K version) keyboard instead (for example if you wanted to put a TS1500 inside a Spectrum+ keyboard case. However, the TS1500 would not support all of the keys on the Spectrum+ keyboard, so this would appear fairly pointless!

The Keyboard of a 48+ is the same of the 128k+.
The +2/+3 (Amstrad Spectrum's are different) and I didn't mencioned
those:
"ZX Spectrum Plus/128K+"
