1. TS2068 software

Hi all,
I've been trying to find TS2068 software available for download
without much luck. All I can find are the Warajevo emulator page,
Alvin Albrecht's site and Johnny Red's Timex Computer World. Has
anyone attempted to dump the contents of any of the cartridges (as
has been done for all the ZX Interface II ROMs)? Perhaps there just
wasn't very much Timex only software released but it seems a shame
that some of what there was still isn't available. In case you're
wondering the reason for my interest is in testing cartridges and
other software with the Timex 2068 emulator on the ZX Spectrum SE.
The emulator works fine and so does Zebra System's "OS-64". I still
need to convert the (Warajevo format) .TAP stuff to .TZX to see if I
can get it to load in FUSE without tape-traps.
Cheers!

I agree!

Fuse can read Warajevo format .TAP files directly (since libspectrum version
0.2.0).

I have made the .TAP file from Timex that I own.
I don't own much of them :\
The cartridges, I already though on that, but I don't have the knowledge to
do it and I have never opened a cartridge. It must have a ROM chip so it
would be necessary to remove the ROM from the board or to make an adaptor to
fit a cartridge on a EPROM burner.
Who would do such a thing?
Johnny Red, Portugal
PS: does anybody know how to make a .p file for ZX81/TS1000 emulators from a
WAV file?

Not all have a ROM. The "ZX Spectrum Emulator"
provided by Unipolbrit has 27128 soldered to the
board. I've removed them and readed, and the
result is zipped on:
http://8bit.yarek.pl/computer/zx.uk2086/
But for example the "States and capitals" has
memory structure sticked to the board (no usual
24 pin case), so there's no way to remove them.

For DOCK cartridges, you could mount a switch on
/ROSCS line and disable it on start. Then load
software to copy from DOCK to HOME and enable
/ROSCS.

I could make an adaptor, but next year, as I have
a lot of projects to finish.

Is it diferent from the one from Timex Portugal?

Maybe that's because it is a AROS cartridge?

Too much for me. :\
And I cannot program in ASM. Only Basic :\

I think that this is not to do now now :)
We all can wait (I think...)

Yes, a bit. All messages are in Polish, also letters
with diacritical signs are available in character
set and from keyboard. I don't know what else, as
I didn't studied it.

Rather because mounting siliceous structure directly
on cartridge board was much cheaper than encasing it
into DIL28.

That is bad. :(

Some time ago I have written some simple program
to transfer FD-68 interface ROM. I can try to find
it...

On a related note, does anyone know how to convert a .P .P81
and .P80 (have I got that last one right)? to a TZX for use with
FUSE and the ZXSE based ZX80/ZX81 emulators (which load from real
ZX80/81 tapes on the real ZXSE).
On a side issue, has anyone had any luck saving to TZX from either
of these emulators or BBC Basic(Z80)? I'm sure I'm doing something
wrong.
And totally unrelated, Jarek has a Polish language version of the
Spectrum ROM on his site that's not listed on your site Phil
(another one for the collection?)
Cheers!

That's odd because I have what claims to be a UK2086 Home ROM which
is exactly the same as the original TS2068 one apart from the boot
message. I suspect it's a fake but I don't recall where I got it
from. I wouldn't mind a copy of the genuine UK2086 ROMs. I can do a
byte comparisson with the TS2068 ones to check for differences, but
the only solid one I can think of would be support for RS232 via the
AY-8910 in place of one of the joysticks.

Well, I could make a mistake. I'm not sure now if the
national characters are available without ZX Spectrum
emulator. :/

The ROMs are in "ROMS.zip" file and are read from my
UK2086.

Well, thanks to AY the ports are bidirectional. :-)
The diodes makes some problems, but...
Some of UK2086 were equiped with 8255. You can see some
pictures on above page. But I wasn't able to find any
software that used the 8255.

IIRC there is no way to represent ZX81 tape blocks in TZX
at the moment (and there has been resistance to suggestions to add
it), despite there being a ZX81 block in the current standard.
ISTR that ZX81 blocks can't be represented in TZX raw files
either, but I don't recall why.

Fuse implements tape saving by trapping the ROM save routine, and
only has support for the original Sinclair/Amstrad ROMS and the
TS2068 ROM. If the BBC Basic ROM has moved the save routine or uses
a custom save routine Fuse will just emulate the sound output without
writing blocks into the current tape image.
Some other emulators will save the raw sound and write that to WAV
(or TZX raw blocks I guess). These can be fed to a tzx creator to
create a regular TZX file or probably loaded as they are if that
emulator supports loading from samples.
I don't know if they have any way to detect that a tape is being
written (I know that some emulators look for likely-looking
instruction sequences to trap loading), but if not I guess it would
be possible to add some menu items in Fuse to start and stop recording
the current sound output as a WAV etc. to allow saving from custom
save routines.

I also have one that is as you describe below. I believe that the
Spectrum emulator is also like this ... only in Polish at boot up.

[ Vague apologies for the TS2068 list for the off-topicness of this; any
later respondents may wish to cut the list out, but I think Andrew
would probably welcome being kept in on any discussion; Fred and I are
both on fuse-emulator-devel, so there's no need for a separate cc if
that's kept in -- PAK ]

The "official" method would be to use a Hardware Info Block signalling a
ZX81, followed by one or more Standard Speed Data Blocks. This makes the
interpretation of a block dependent on those blocks which "preceed" it
in the file, which is (IMO) pretty bonkers.
I don't believe anyone has ever actually made such a TZX file. If they
did, libspectrum would still interpret it as Spectrum ROM saved data.
This is a feature, not a bug :-)
> ISTR that ZX81 blocks can't be represented in TZX raw files

The only reason I can think of for that would be the mess the TZX format
is in with respect to whether it wants to model edge triggered formats,
level triggered formats or both. Modulo that, I believe a ZX81 tape
_could_ be stored as a sequence of Pure Tone and Pause blocks, but this
would be really very ugly.
Mike Wynne proposed a "Pulse Encoded Block" for the TZX format:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=6519&forum=1
but the discussion sort of died and he just went back to using .p files
for EightyOne.

Probably could be useful for something.
