1. TS2068 / spectrum

Loic Daneels · Thu, 5 Sep 2002 10:02:

Ok, I have read some litterature on the subject, but
there are still some confusing areas.
- Would the TS2068 allow me to play UK spectrum tapes
(provided I have the ROM cart, that is) ?
- If so, is there a specific tape player for the
system ?
- Would there be any PAL / NTSC incompatibilities ?
- Is there a way I can find the system & the ROM cart
somewhere ? Any help locating them would be great
- What exactly is the Timex 1000 ? Does it play
spectrum tapes ?
Many thanks for any help you can provide,

Loic

Yes.

No.

www.ebay.com

- What exactly is the Timex 1000?

ZX81 with 2K RAM, US keyboard, and US NTSC channel 2/3 RF modulator. That's
it.

Does it play spectrum tapes ?

No way. Never.

It's been a long time, but I'll try to recall some of the answers for
you - see below:

Yes. Most, but not all.

> - If so, is there a specific tape player for the system ?

Not that I can remember. I just used the same tape player I used for my
Timex software.

> - Would there be any PAL / NTSC incompatibilities ?

Maybe, but I didn't run into any when I used it.

I'm sure someone on this list would be able to help you. In the worst
case scenario, just buy an old Spectrum on eBay for the ROM, then wire
it in parallel to the Timex ROM and use an A/B switch on the power lines
to the chips. Be sure to turn off power to the computer when switch
between ROMS. I did it this way - fit the ROM inside the computer, and
put a mini A/B switch on the side of the case to switch between them.
Worked great.

The 1000 was the predecessor to the 2068 in North America. It was an
improvement on the ZX81 unit. I don't think there was any way to use
Spectrum software on it, but I could be wrong. I only dealt with 2068
and Sinclair QL stuff at the time, and didn't follow the other lines.

No problem. Hope it helps.

Senen.

It should, yes. (Original Spectrum (48K) only.)

> - If so, is there a specific tape player for the system ?

No. Well, there is (the Timex/Sinclair 2020), but it's just a standard
mono tape deck, and may not even be the best choice. Any such deck will
work.

> - Would there be any PAL / NTSC incompatibilities ?

In terms of software? I don't think so. I see that a lot with, say, the
Commodore 64, but I haven't heard of problems with the 2068 vs. the
Spectrum. In terms of hardware? Yeah, the 2068 will only work with an NTSC
display.

> - Is there a way I can find the system & the ROM cart somewhere ?

eBay?

Um, if you don't already have these rare items, and your goal is to run
Spectrum tapes, it might be just as easy to get an actual Spectrum, plus a
power adapter (if applicable) and a PAL-compatible display; or else, just
use an emulator -- some of them can load from tape.

> - What exactly is the Timex 1000 ?

It's a Sinclair ZX81, with 2K internal RAM instead of 1K.

> Does it play spectrum tapes ?

Not even close. The ZX81 is the model that preceeded the Spectrum (and
followed the ZX80). It uses the same processor and a similar BASIC, but is
otherwise very different and much more primitive. There are Spectrum/2068
programs that let you load some ZX81/1000 BASIC programs, but nothing to
go the other way -- the ZX81 isn't capable of reading the data at the rate
Spectrum tapes use, plus its capabilities are only a small subset of the
Spectrum's.

Hello Loic...

If you have a T/S 2068 with a properly fitted ZX Spectrum emulator ROM you
should be able to play 95% of the games and other programs from Britain as
they come off the tape.

The video output for the T/S 2068 is NTSC. If you can hook it up to an NTSC
television you should be ok. (I have no idea which country you are in so if
the TVs there are on some other system you will have to find some sort of
adaptor or replace the modulator in the T/S 2068). You could also build
yourself an RGB interface and use an RGB monitor. There is also an output
for a composite monitors. Some people, including myself, have used the
monitor output run through the camera input of their VCRs to get output to
the television.

The T/S 1000 is the same machine as the ZX-81 except it has about 2Kb of
added memory. It is strictly black and white with a almost no-existant
graphic abilities. No, it does not play ZX Spectrum tapes. In fact it often
has problems playing its own tapes.

Hope this helps,

David Solly

Ok, I have read some litterature on the subject, but
there are still some confusing areas.

- Would the TS2068 allow me to play UK spectrum tapes
(provided I have the ROM cart, that is) ?

*There are compatibility issues with out the rom cartridge.

- If so, is there a specific tape player for the
system ?

*No any player will do

- Would there be any PAL / NTSC incompatibilities ?

*Cant use a NTSC 2068 on a PAL TV set. I tried my spectrum 128k on a
Canadian TV and It didn't work.

- Is there a way I can find the system & the ROM cart
somewhere ? Any help locating them would be great

*Don't know about this one.

- What exactly is the Timex 1000 ? Does it play
spectrum tapes ?

*Same as ZX81 and it doesn't play spectrum tapes.

Hope this helps, and please correct me if I am incorrect.

James

-Yes, TS2068 can play almost all the Spectrum 48K Software if you have the
Spectrum Emulator Cartridge.

-You can use any tape recorder that have a ear socket or similar.

-PAL is incompatible with NTSC and vice-versa.

-What system are you trying to find? A TS2068?

-The Timex 1000 is the first Timex computer and it is a ZX81 clone. It Plays
ZX81 tapes.

There were some ZX81s sold in the U.S. -- with, of course, NTSC video, and
I think with the U.S. keyboard layout -- before the TS1000 appeared. I got
one of those; it was the first computer I owned. As I recall, it was
advertised in kit form, but they ran out of kits and sent fully assembled
units instead (for the same price), for which they apologized. :-)

True, the ZX81 kit came assembled but the ZX80 came as a kit that I
assembled in 1979, $99.95.
