1. TS2068 Spectrum ROM/emulator board/etc

Brian Green · Fri, 21 Jan 2011 16:30

I've been looking for some time to find a Spectrum ROM or cart or whatever
for my TS2068 and haven't had much luck. Is there someone who still makes
these/sells these/etc?

Thanks, Brian

You will see them on Ebay once in a while, used, and extremely over-priced. You might see the cased ones which are just original Timex cartridges that were broken to put a home-made one inside (and sometimes the hole was covered with a sticker to make it look "official"), and you will see a couple different versions of uncased ones.

I don't know anyone who makes them and offers them for sale, but I've been talking to two people hoping that one day one of them will create a batch of blank cartridges which users will be able to buy and "flash" whatever they want to them, as many times as they want, via the TS2068 or a PC. This is already possible on the Spectrum via the interface 2 and cartridges and software for sale by Paul Farrow, and the same principle could be adapted for use on the TS2068. I think these blank cartridges, if they become a reality, will put an end to overpriced stuff on eBay, and will give all TS2068 users the ability to have one with the Spectrum rom, or a different O.S. , game or whatever they want it to have. When and if I'm able to help this happen, users won't have to deal with soldering eproms or dealing with eproms and sockets. Everything will be done with flash memory and all done via software.

If you or anyone you know can create a cartridge by studying how the old ones were made, please check my friend's website. Some of the pictures and info there were preserved after I sent him my own cartridges for studying. The following are old cartridges that needed an eprom to be inserted (either with the contents of a Spectrum rom or something else):

http://hardware.speccy.org/hardware/Cartucho-TS2068-i.html
http://hardware.speccy.org/hardware/Cartucho-TS2068-i%28II%29.html

There are also pictures and info about the old Spectrum emulator cartridges (the Timex Portugal one, the one/s with some modifications made by American users, the one made by someone in Poland, etc.) but I don't have time to look up all those right now.

Hope this helps.

Zebra Systems sold the cartridges from Timex Portugal, and we made our own
cartridges.

The cartridge slot can't be *that* complicated. At most it's the address lines for 64K of RAM and a refresh signal. Although in theory carts can be a mix of ROM and RAM, in practice I'm not aware of any that supplied their own RAM. Also most carts were either 16K or 32K (usually in two separate 16K chunks to avoid the video page). To my knowledge the only 64K cart is my conversion of Shadow of the Unicorn.

Wait a second... I didn't think this was a "question" I have a link at home for a site which offers the spectrum emulator cartridge, and a whole bunch of other stuff too.. when I get home I'll post it

Is there a component list for the different types of cartridges that were available? Has anyone put together a component list? I may have most of the components, but I need a checklist to go by. The first list I need, is the component list for the Zebra Spectrum emulator cartridge of which I have 4 in partial completion. The boards are all the same, but it seems that they are all in different states of production. I am not an electronics tech, but, many of the components I may have on hand.I also have 2 of the GESSO boards pictured in your link, and see the numbers for the EPROMS, I'll check my EPROM bin and see if those components are here. Even if all of the components are here, then what?? There are at least 5 virgin Larken cartridge boards unpopulated, but no backplane boards.

In conversations with Eric prior to his untimely death I learned that most of the components he had were for the TS2068, although a few were for the 1000 & 1500, along with a scattering for the FDD system. Review of the large Timex 2068 manual might help identify components.

Is it just a matter of swapping the ROM on the computer itself (if you don't
want to take advantage of all the TS2068s features)? Since I originally
sent that out, I did pick up an EPROM burner and I haven't found a reason to
use it yet.. this might give me a reason ;)

Thanks Jack,
The specific projects that I would like to have completed are
1) Oliger Expansion board
2) Oliger disk interface
3) Larken 256 RAM disk board
4) Spectrum Emulator Board (backplaned?)
I have lots of questions to go with those projects and am not sure where to start. My end goal is to be able to use Larken or Oliger and to be able to switch between Timex and Spectrum emulation. Will all of this work with the Larken cartridge sitting in the dock bay? Any help will be appreciated. Oh, by the way, I came across your phone number as I was going through hardware. Can I give you a call?
thanks,
Neil

How does the 2068 run Spectrum ROM if the cartridge port is taken up by the Larken Cartridge? The Russell magnetic ROM switch comes to mind...or can the ROM be loaded by disk? RAMdisk? thanks

Some of the pictures and info there were preserved after I sent him my own cartridges for studying. The following are old cartridges that needed an eprom to be inserted (either with the contents of a Spectrum rom or something else):

The Larken cartridge has a socket for an additional ROM. If I'm remembering
this correctly, I got a Spectrum ROM from Larry Kenny along with the disk
system that was modified to not start up unless you held down the "K" key at
power-on. I also tried an OS-64 ROM in the socket (pried out of its
cartridge), which I vaguely recall as having some problems, but basically it
worked.

P.S. With the extra ROM socket filled, the cartridge slot door does
not fully close.

Is this the mod where the Spectrum Rom is piggybacked on top of the Larken Rom? Did Larry send you any documentation or instructions that you care to share?

Most likely the CL extension refers to a Programmable Logic Array source file. Sometimes the extension is used for LISP files but in this case I don't think so.  PLAs are used quite a bit in computers back then.

Did you ever have the experience of the Russell ROMswitch? Do you know if it would work on the 2068 with the Larken cartridge in the dock at the same time? I am scouring every issue of Time Designs Magazine to find an answer to that.

I am in the process of trying to obtain a ROMswitch and the Version3 Spectrum Rom. I have seen software on some of my disks titled "S-ROM.CL" and wondered if this was the code to burn the ROM on an EPROM burner?

My Tech. angel musician buddy stopped by to look at the Larken RAMDISK project and never scratched his head or looked bewildered. I showed him the board and the schematics and the partially collected parts and he told me to gather all the components up and he would build it, so...now it's like I am on a scavenger hunt...lol. He said this was old school sh*t and he normally works under a microscope to do his board level work, that this would be childsplay for him. Wish us luck...

Hey Darrell,
That particular file extension .CL, in Larken "speak", the "C" is for machine code and the "L" is for Larken format. Had it been .BL it would have signified a program in BASIC in LARKEN format. FYI....peace...neil
