1. TS2068 switchable ROM Method

Chris Raynak · Thu, 2 Jan 2014 09:02:

Hi Richard,

Can you tell me / pm me, how much it would be for one of these ROM chips from you? Once upon a time, I had a "fully loaded" TS2068 which included a piggybacked Spectrum ROM which worked well. After giving the unit away many years ago, I have returned to the TS2068 having obtained another one. :)

Right now it is DOA with a power regulator issue that I am trying to rectify. But assuming I get it working, performing the hardware mod to add your ROM would be next on my list.

Also, do you know if there are any "clones" out there of the ZXPander board (for the ZX81) that will work with the TS2068, so we can save or load to an SD card?  I use to save and load programs using the Oliger FDD system. That also was given away (but I still have an issue 1.0 firmware ROM that John first developed all those years ago)

Thanks for your time.

Regards

Hi, Cris.

I'm Oscar from Brazil.
If I my give my opinion, the zxpander is for zx81 clones, for ts2068(almost a ZXSpectrum clone) you need a twister board(also a rom switch to select the zxSpectrum ROM) and a divIde to load from IDE-CF ou IDE-SD card.

The JO Disc Interface is very rare these days...I'm searching for one for almost 10 years everywere, mostly in eBay.com! That will be a hard one to get....Or maybe you can buy it back from the same person you have selled to.

Regards,
Oscar

Hi Oscar,
Yes, i know the ZXpander is for the ZX81, but thank you for the info on the twister board :)  Do you know who offers a twister board right now?  Hopefully Richard will chime in on the ROM chip question too.

Believe me, I wish I could get the JLO interface back. I remember the Version 2 JLO eprom that I had enabled a really nice NMI button feature.  What you could do was load a program from tape, then once loaded, press the NMI button.  This would cause a non maskable interupt and force the CPU to jump to code contained in the EPROM onboard the JLO interface.  The TS2068 would "freeze" the program, and wait for you to push one of the numeric keys. Once you did, it would save the entire contents of the TS2068 memory to the disk drive under the file number you chose (1 thru 9) then the program would resume.  From that point, to reload the program from disk later, all you had to do was choose to load the file and the program would instantly load and startup. Quite a clever set up!

Later on, there was an "add-on" of sorts written as software by someone else from the JLO. It was called "Becker DOS". I ran across the 5 1/4 floppy a few days ago for it. However without a working JLO system to use it isn't of much use.

John Oliger use to call my BBS years ago to help users with his interface  (there was a forum set up for him). That part of the BBS was run on a Commodore 64.  What I am going to try and do is determine if John ever uploaded any schematics or other items for his system to those old disks. If so, I might be able to pull the info.  I still have John's old address so perhaps he would still be willing to share some of his information that way as well.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,
It could be interesting if you can get back your BBS data and publish it some place.
Thanks to a member of this forum I have 3 of the 4 boards of JLO unpopulated.
I was trying to reconstruct the schematics from these boards. I was doing some guessing and elemental reverse engineering but I've reached a dead point because i haven't the components of the complex boards.
My idea is to have schematics to rebuild JLO disk systems and publish them in this forum. I've been warned about doing it because John still have copyright, patents or whatever and he can sue me for copying his product.
I know that some members have tried to contact him, unsuccessfully, for several years. I assume that he is not interested in this product any more and we can start a "historical project" to keep this interface alive.
To complete my work i need pictures of the component side of all boards and obviously the fourth board (Disk B, I think).
I hope you have some information I can use to continue the project.
 Regards,
Eduardo.

Hi Eduardo,

That is an interesting idea!

Did you know that John had released the source code for the last version of the JLO interface a number of years ago, so that owners may maintain / modify their own boards?  I discovered this recently along with a note from John that he still wished to retain the rights to the code, but that it could be published elsewhere as long as the disclaimer was preserved.

What I also found interesting, is that for the first time, along with the code, was an email address for John. Up to this point, all I have seen is his Cumberland Indiana mailing address.  So I was planning on attempting to contact him as well, just to see if he would have any objection for what you propose.

My guess would be that if a schematic was created, as long as the same disclaimer for it's intended purpose went along with it, John might agree to it.

I really need to see what remains on those old BBS diskettes now. :)

I wish you luck contacting him. If you find a way to communicate with John it could be a good advance for all of those that want to have a JLO.
I'll be waiting news about your BBS data.
