Is the Timex/Sinclair version of BASIC 100% backward-compatible with the BASIC that is in the Timex/Sinclair 1000? That is, if I were to type in a TS 1000 BASIC program that didn't use any machine language subroutines (if that's even possible to do from BASIC from the TS 1000), would it work?

Also, can a TS2068 natively load TS 1000 programs from "tape," well, my computer's sound card?

No, while the TS2068 BASIC is a evolution of the TS1000 BASIC the syntax and keywords are slightly different as well as having some differences based on the hardware (like losing SLOW and FAST modes) and different graphic symbols. With a bit of effort many programs can be adapted for the newer machine though.

The tape encoding schemes are quite different so you can’t directly load TS 1000 tapes into a TS2068. You could write a program to read the raw data but the programs would still need adapting.

Upload 2000, in theory, will convert a 1000 program into 2068 Basic. I’ve never used it.

Thanks for answering my questions, guys. I guess it isn't a loss that the T/S 2000 series can't take direct advantage of the earlier programs. Those programs all would have been B&W and silent anyway. I see on YouTube videos that many people use their 2068 to run Spectrum software via the emulator cart (which I do have). I've always thought that it was a shame that the 2068's extra features never were used extensively.

I've had the urge to unbox and use my TS/2068 since looking closely through my classic computer book collection over the last few weeks. I have more Timex/Sinclair/Z80 books than I remembered. I may make a video which features them all (or at least some of the more interesting ones).

Adam

Actually I think it is a bigger shame that Timer did not stick with the
TS2000, instead of the TS2068 and make it as close to Spectrum compatible
as possible. With twister cards and emulator cartridges it seems that would
have been easy to do. The advantage of compatibility would have far greater
than the small technical advantages. In the end in forced them out of the
market.
