1. Using a ZX Interface 1 with TS2068

Rich Mellor · Thu, 10 Jun 2010 04:36

Has anyone managed to successfully use a ZX Interface 1 with the TS2058 (with a twister board)?

One of my customers has this set up and finds that sometimes the TS2068 recognises the ZX Interface 1 keywords, but sometimes does not. The network appears to sometimes try to work (flashing border), but not always and the ZX Microdrive only spins up for a few seconds.

We were wondering if there is insufficient power to run the ZX Interface 1

Any suggestions/ideas are welcome (could it just be a dirty edge connector for example)?

Many thanks

Rich Mellor

Hi Bruno, Rich,

I am the customer in question. Knowing that the interface works for some is a good news. I will try again. What is strange, is that even if I keep receiving unreadable error messages and no results, the computer never crash.

The microdrive really look like it has some difficulties to spin and reach its nominal speed. I don't know, could the small difference in clock speed between a 2068 and a real spectrum be an issue ?

Regards,
François

If memory serves correct one of these gentleman is Jack Boatwright, a member here. I'm not sure what could be causing that issue.

Does the IF1 and microdrive work correctly with ZX spectrum?

Some people might be away because of vacations (or in my case, because of extra work). There are at least two people that I know that have used the Interface 1 with the twister board and according to them it works. Years ago I had a ZX Interface 1 working with my TS2068 and a twister board. As I recall this worked fairly well. One possible difference with my setup was that I used a Jack Dohany 32k Spectrum/Timex EPROM (similar in use to the Russell ROM Switch) instead of the cartridge mounted Spectrum ROM sold by Zebra here in the USA. Even though I had the Zebra cartridge Spectrum ROM, I never tested it with the ZX Interface 1. It was just easier to use the Jack Dohany switched EPROM.

The only time I had problems with the ZX Interface 1 working with the TS2068 was when I removed the ZX Interface 1 ROM (actually a friend removed it) and installed a custom EPROM with code to work with the TS2068 code. It only worked about a third of the time and only when I had an OS-64 cartridge plugged into the game port. It never initialized correctly without the OS-64 cartridge installed and I never figured that out. It was probably something to do with the way I wrote my code, anyway I gave up after a few days of working on it.

BTW, I did not receive three of the four e-mails regarding this subject from the list server. The only one I received was the one below written by Bruno. I found the other three by logging into the TS2068 Yahoo Group.

You will need a Spectrum ROM. The IF1 doesn't work with the standard Timex ROM. Could the power supply frequency be an issue? The microdrives are designed to run off a machine running at 50Hz, not 60Hz. Might make a difference when trying to LOAD stuff saved from a 50Hz machine. Might make no difference at all.
