1. Why Use "Out" for Spectrum Cartridge?

How come the Spectrum cartridge needs the "OUT" command issued to reboot with the Spectrum ROM? What exactly is it doing?

If I was to put in a normal T/S 2068 cartridge, it would start when the computer turned on, right? I wouldn't have to issue a command, would I? I know the Vic-20 had some games that required a "SYS" command to be issued. I never knew why this was, but I suspect the answer would be the same for both computers.

I believe it is a setting for the memory paging system to page in the
bottom 16K of the dock memory bank over the home memory bank,
replacing the built in ROM with the one on the cartridge.

I think it was done that way to allow you to leave the cartridge in
there and activate it only when you want to.

There are two types of TS cartridge (LROS and AROS I think?), one
autostarts (most of the software produced on cartridge), the other
doesn't like the Spectrum emulator cartridge.

There is more detail in the technical manual.

Fred

Adam --

Not all Speccy emulator carts require a command -- just for the
record, I have one here which I got from Rod Humphreys of the Vancouver
Sinclair Users Group years ago which puts the machine in Spectrum mode
immediately on power-up.

It is possible by making an LROS/AROS using Spectrum ROM
contents. Also, by forcing the /BE line on cartridge slot,
in this case ZXROM is seen in all Home, Dock and EXROM.
But such cartridge is no more compatibile to Portuguese
Timex Computer 2068 and will cause memory conflicts on
it.

Could you save the ROM to WAV/TAP file?
 SAVE "ROM" CODE 0,16384
And perhaps also the top Dock memory:
 OUT 244,51:SAVE "TOP" CODE 32768,16384

Jarek --

I have an EPROM programmer here -- if you like I can read the
ROM in hex format and email it to you. Let me know.

OK, if this is simpler for you. I'm interested.
But please save it as binary.

Have a good time!

My Spectrum cart is an outboard unit that plugs into the expansion
connector. There is a small switch to set in Spectrum or 2068 mode and
it starts up in the selected mode.

I took the ROM out and put it in the Larken socket and in there it
required the OUT command to make it go.
