1. ZX Appeal newsletters - scanned

zxbruno · Sun, 28 Feb 2010 03:27

A couple months ago I expressed my desire in helping preserve Timex Sinclair newsletters. I also receive some recommendations on how to make all the scanned pictures look better and the best thing was that a few people offered to help go through my scans to help with the work (straightening, contrast/brightness adjustments, cropping, converting to .PDF, etc.). Well, here's the work of a few of my co-workers and me. All the ZX Appeal newsletters which were kindly sent to me by a gentleman from this group are now scanned. There were a few loose pages and a few things that might be missing or might need to be re-scanned. But I'm hoping all the content is there. The following link allows you to download all the scans but the file is 1.2GB in size.

I hope this will be useful to someone, and if anyone here wants to help me with the work of improving what I did, please let me know. That way, at some point, we'll have a collection of .JPGs or .PDFs or both and a lot more people will be able to enjoy it.

Hmm, a gentleman has informed me that megaupload won't allow people to download files over 1GB in size unless they pay. :( ! I'm going to split this in two files and will post 2 new URLs as soon as both files are uploaded.

Thanks! Adrive and wetransfer seem to be good. I wasn't aware of any of them! But since I've already uploaded part 1 of 2 to Megaupload, I think I'll upload part 2 to the same way, at least this time.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LA8V8M50

Uploading part 2 of 2 now.

Oh, in case someone is wondering, I obtained permission to scan, preserve all share all this material online. :)

Has anyone started reading the newsletters yet? There's so much good stuff it's hard to believe. Many names that you see and makes you go to Google, in the hope that you'll be able to find people from the Sinclair past! For now I'm just opening the folders, right-clicking the front cover .jpg, choosing Windows Preview and using the arrows to navigate through the scans. It's actually quite enjoyable!

I still have so many things to scan, but I think I'm going to take a break for some time.

I'm trying to find the topic where someone offered to fix the scans for me and create PDFs, but my Z80 isn't working very well today...

P.S. I checked adrive.com today, but it's not free. The free version is only for personal/private use.

I'm busy over in the Astrocade world with my website... but reading newsletters for systems that most people don't know much about is ALWAYS cool.

I'm willing to help you with that.  I have Acrobat.  Creating a pdf is as simple as pointing to the original JPG and adding them.  So, doing this for you would be a breeze.  Just point me to the JPGs that you want converted.

When Bill pointed you to that, he had just pointed it out to me for another group.  I used it with one other person, but in order to share the files we DID have to share the password.  If you're only sharing files with a couple of people, then THIS is the way to go.

Here is a procedure to create PDF files, convert from any format (html, text, doc ….) to PDF format. This simple procedure involves adding PDF printer. I have tried it on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)1.1.* From the menu, go to System —> Administration —> Printing* Click on New Printner, let it search and come up with “Select Connection” menu. Select “Print into PDF file” , click on forward* “Select Printer from Database” window will appear. “Generic” will be selected by default which is the right option. just click on forward, button.* Again, in the next window keep “PDF File Generator” option untouched and click on forward button.* In the next widow, type in the printer name, description etc. and click on “apply” to finalize the settings.Thats all, and you have created a PDF printer. Next time you want to convert anything to PDF format, just choose to print and select the PDF printer.

Yes, I've successfully used it to share with multiple people, all free. Once
the PDF's are made anyway, the file sizes will be much, much smaller. I'd
even be willing to host the files on Armchair Arcade after they're converted
if hosted space is needed.
